Sonia is a 2nd year BSc Computer Science student. She enjoys the theoretical and practical work on her course and the academic support she receives.
What were you doing before you came to study at City?
I was at college studying for my A-levels in Computing, Chemistry and Physics. After I completed my second-year project for my Computing A-level, I realised I enjoyed all the challenges involved: from learning a new programming language to designing and implementing a solution. I felt that pursing a computer science degree would help me explore topics in greater depth.
Why did you decide to apply to study at City, University of London?
The location was attractive making it very easy to commute to every day. I realised that the range of facilities that City offered, such as the computer lab rooms and the Ada Lovelace learning space that also provide an ideal working environment for students. Moreover, the Computer Science course offers the opportunity to gain work experience through the Professional Pathway scheme, allowing students to take a placement year in industry.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City?
I enjoy the mix of theoretical and practical work that is involved within the course. For example, we creating a game in first year and had a team project in second year. Throughout my time here, the faculty staff have also been very passionate, encouraging and supportive.
What kind of things are you involved in outside of your course?
I am currently participating in City’s Professional Mentoring scheme where I am assigned a mentor from industry. This has been useful for networking and gaining more industry-specific knowledge. I am also enjoying being a Marketing Student Ambassador, where I get to meet students outside my course while promoting City.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I hope to start my career as software engineer. Now I am interested in the development of technology within the medical sector. Technology is constantly evolving: you could do anything.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
If you are up for the challenge, keep an open mind for the opportunities that may arise. Try things outside of your comfort zone to find new interests and grow. You never know what you are capable of until you try.
