Sarah Jardine is an undergraduate student at City studying BA Journalism.
Why did you decide to apply to study at City?
What really appealed to me about journalism at City was the fact it is the best university for journalism in London, and it’s a widely respected course within the industry. The course covers a wide range of topics which is great if you’re not sure which aspect of journalism you want to specialise in. Also, there’s a compulsory module for learning a language in the first year which I found interesting because I'd always wanted to learn German, and that gave me the opportunity to do so.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City?
How tight-knit the journalism community is, the lecturers are very supportive and it feels like the staff truly know you as individuals and how you want to advance your career.
What experience have you had that will help you with future careers?
On the journalism course there is a employability module and that was helpful to craft our CV’s and guide us through mock interviews. City also has many talks from industry professionals that help give insight into the industry, one that I attended this year was about the future of social media within journalism which had guest speakers from the BBC and the Huffington Post. I’ve also had previous work experience for The Sunday Times Travel Magazine at the end of second year.
What is your favourite thing about living in London?
There are so many amazing events on and places to visit, so it’s a really exciting place to live and study in. There’s such a ‘buzz’ in this city that you don’t quite get anywhere else.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I’ll be working for The Sun Online as a Social Media Manager.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
Work hard at your A-levels and get as much experience as possible in the field you want to go into before you start your studies.
