This course has allowed me to take interesting journalism modules while also advancing my writing ability and ‘voice’
Why did you decide to apply to study at City?
Unlike most universities, City offers a refreshing English degree that focuses on literature as well as professional writing. This combination is ideal for critical students who are passionate about literature but also want to gain applicable, professional skills for their future career.
What were the most important resources in helping you to make a decision?
I actually transferred from another London university to City, a decision I can happily say I am grateful to have taken. The staff have been great in helping me settle in quickly and adapt to the new environment.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City?
As someone who wants to pursue a career in journalism, this course has allowed me to take interesting journalism modules while also advancing my writing ability and ‘voice’ through interesting modules and workshops. The department is full of very qualified, passionate educators who are happy to help with any problems or endeavours.
What experience have you had that will help you with future careers?
The English and Journalism Departments are relentlessly skilled at organising visits from impressive industry professionals. There are constant lectures available with guest journalists, writers and publishers who give useful insights into their respective fields.
What is your favourite thing about living in London?
As a commuter, my experience of London is a little different (though cheaper!) to other students. City, thankfully, has been very sympathetic to potential train delays and other commuter problems.
City is really in the heart of London, which has been great for quick travelling to enjoy some of London’s best spots. There is also an abundance of restaurants and an eclectic mix of food options at every turn, for which I am extremely grateful.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I plan to work towards becoming a journalist. I suspect my course’s blend of analytical, theoretical and writing-oriented modules will prove invaluable in not just developing my skills for the field but understanding my place and responsibilities in it.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
English is a degree that thrives off passion and interest. All interesting debates and lessons are rooted in that simple passion for the subject. The key is to care. If you let that interest shine through in your application, you won’t only succeed but you’ll be achieving a rarity: doing something you love.
