Rachel is a 2nd year BSc Speech and Language Therapy student. Prior to her course at City, she studied English and worked in the corporate world.
What were you doing before you came to study at City?
I grew up in Chester, North West England, and moved to London when I was 18 to study English at King’s College London. After graduating, I worked in the corporate world for three years before making the move I was always destined for: to work in health care.
Why did you decide to apply to study at City, University of London?
City is the hub of speech and language therapy in London. Knowing I would be living in London after qualifying, I wanted to build my network and have my clinical placements in London.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City?
For a university in one of the biggest cities in the world, City is a small place. There is a community feel here and I love that. I see lots of people I know around and about all the time. Above and beyond this, the teaching staff are world-leading. I am extremely fortunate to have been taught by the best academics their field.
What kind of things are you involved in outside of your course?
I am the President of the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Society, so I organise events with external speakers for the SLT student community. I also work part-time as a Widening Participation Ambassador, which is one of the best experiences of my time at City. We host school kids from areas of low-progression rates to higher education, show them around our campus and talk to them about the merits and opportunities of higher education. Through this work, I have met the most inspirational, hard-working and motivated young people.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I will be a practising speech and language therapist on the NHS. Because of my love of children, I will likely end up in paediatrics. My favourite client groups are stammering, cleft palate and early years (0-5 years).
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
Talk about why you have chosen City, what you like about our campus, the course and our teaching staff. And of course, highlight what makes you unique and special.
