"Although I have been working at my placement for only four months, I have learned a variety of aircraft engineering-based skills."
Where are you undertaking your current work placement and what have been the main responsibilities so far?
I am currently undertaking a placement year in East Midlands Airport, working as an Aircraft Engineering Intern at DHL Air.
My first project consisted of developing an Engineering Department Handbook, containing a detailed description of the roles and responsibilities concerning individual Engineering team members, their interface with internal departments and external organisations.
Following a visit to Sky Wheel regarding B767 main wheel damage, I have recently started working on my second project, which involves monitoring brake unit component replacements of all DHL Air B767 aircraft during C-checks.
I also undertake any ad-hoc tasks, such as amending Engineering procedures and performing data analysis of aircraft delays/cancellations.
What skills have you learnt during your time at the placement?
Although I have been working here for only four months, I have learned a variety of aircraft engineering-based skills. I have also gained a good understanding of technical language specific to aviation, i.e. acronyms/abbreviations. Most importantly, I have developed great communication skills by interacting with a variety of people at DHL Air and external organisations.
Tell us about a positive standout moment during your placement which was most memorable?
My most memorable moment so far was visiting a cargo aircraft on the flight line for the first time.
What do you hope to achieve during your time at the placement?
By the end of my placement I am hoping to fully understand how an airline works, as well as gaining experience in all departments of DHL Air.
How do you think the placement will help with your overall career goals and aspirations?
Not only I am gaining knowledge about aircraft systems and components, but I am also getting a general overview of how an airline operates. This is essential for my future goals, as I aspire to continue working within the aviation industry after graduating.
