Blessing is studying the MSc in Organisational Psychology. She chose it to gain the knowledge and skills required to set up her consultancy.
What was your main motivation to undertake postgraduate study?
My main motivation for undertaking postgraduate study is to gain the theoretical and practical knowledge of what it takes to become an Organisational Psychologist.
What were the factors that influenced your decision making when considering postgraduate study?
Firstly, I work here at City therefore I chose it because of its close proximity. Secondly, City academics are experts in their field and have practical experience.
Finally, City offers excellent support for students and I knew that I would have benefited from it myself from both the academics and administrative staff as a result of studying here.
What were, if any, the main challenges that affected your decision about postgraduate study? How did you overcome them?
Because I am working full-time at City, I had to overcome the challenges of time and course commitment that require me to take one day out of my working week to study. I am using my annual leave to cover my study days but I know it will be well worth it at the end, so I don't mind making the sacrifice.
Why did you choose City?
From my research, I discovered City is one of the best universities for studying Organisational Psychology. The course has the right combination of theory and practice and we are taught by academics who are still working in the industry and have practical experience.
What has been your student experience at City so far?
So far my experience has been challenging and pleasurable. Challenging because I am learning new things and Psychology is a new subject that I have not studied before. Pleasurable because I have met other mature students like myself who have had different experiences. It is very useful being able to connect and help each other in our studies.
How studying a postgraduate degree has helped you develop personally and professionally?
I am learning professional skills from organisational psychologists and gaining practical experience of coaching and designing and delivering training which are skills that I will need once I complete my master’s degree.
What skills and knowledge do you think the course has helped you develop?
We do a lot of individual and group presentations and group work therefore I have improved communication, presentation, coaching and training skills.
What opportunities and experiences City has offered you during your course?
I have been selected for the Professional Mentoring scheme and will be a given a mentor who is far ahead of me in terms of their career and experience. I am really looking forward to engaging in the mentoring process.
What advice would you give to people thinking about postgraduate study? What would you have liked to know then that you know now?
I would advise them to do their research about the subject they want to study. I would also recommend that they study on a regular basis because the reading list builds up quickly and if you don't set time aside on a regular basis to read the material, it can easily build up. Also, begin your essays and start revising for your exams early on and do not leave it until the last minute.
What are your career plans once you have completed your postgraduate degree?
My career plan is to set up a consultancy to offer executive coaching and leadership training to businesses.
How do you think City has equipped you for the next stage in your career journey?
City has equipped me with the theoretical knowledge, practical training and confidence to be able to set up my consultancy firm.
