'I chose to study MSc International Business Economics because it is broad, and includes various interesting modules.'
How did you develop an interest in International Business Economics and why did you choose to study it at Postgraduate level?
After my bachelor degree in Finance I wanted to continue my education in economics with an International presence. I was considering Spain, USA and UK. In the end, I found that City, University of London has the best modules amongst other alternative universities, and the teaching is applicable to the real world. Furthermore, I found all the necessary information about the course in an organised way on the University website. As everything was clear including the conditions and requirements to attend City, I made my decision confidently.
How are you finding the transition from Undergraduate to Postgraduate study?
I studied my bachelor degree in another country. From my study experience I think that City has less of a theoretical approach compared with my other degree. I think this will be more beneficial for my career as I am learning practical skills for the workplace.
Have you completed any work experience/ placements during your course? Where did you complete these and how will they help with your future career?
As I studied my Masters Degree for only one year, I did not have time for work placements. However, I liked the opportunity of working as a Student Ambassador for the University. It is a good opportunity to spend time with active students and other stakeholders, and bring in additional income to your student budget.
How have you found the teaching on your course? Have you been involved in Research any or Major projects?
I really like my course and my teachers. The main reason I chose to study my degree at City, University London is because of my course structure. I chose to study MSc International Business Economics because it is broad, and includes various interesting modules. I like that the teachers do not only teach theory, but they help us to apply learnt knowledge to real cases.
How have you benefited from the facilities at City? Do they help you to practice and prepare for your future career/study?
Absolutely- I think university facilities are very modern and convenient to use. During my course I used to spend a lot of time at university, especially in the library.
Students have a comfortable environment to study which I think is very nice. Northampton square is one of my favourite places at the University. The green environment just around the corner makes a perfect place to take a break and recharge your brain during exams.
City also provides students with modern and fast computers, study rooms and renovated university building, which creates good conditions to study. Moreover, there are lots of sources for studying books or data providers such as Bloomberg terminals, Thomson Reuters, Morningstar etc. For sure all these conditions made my study process more comfortable and helped me gain knowledge that I can contribute to my career.
Have you used City’s career service for support with paid work and your personal career development?
I really like that City has a career’s service to help students with their future career and development. I participated in some modules of the employability skills programme, where students have an opportunity to meet with real company representatives and get useful advice. Another thing which was useful to me was their CV and Cover Letter appointments. City’s career service really has to offer depending on the student’s preference.
What are you planning to do upon graduation from City?
I have just graduated from my Master’s Degree at City. Full of knowledge and enthusiasm I am going to go back to my country and apply my gained lifeskills and knowledge in Kazakhstan.
