What was your main motivation to undertake postgraduate study?

My main motivation to undertake postgraduate study was always a need for gaining knowledge and improving my soft and hard skills, because those always lead to self-development.

Therefore, after earning my bachelor degree at Wroclaw University of Economics and a few years of continuous work, applying for master programme in Maritime Operations and Management was a natural decision.

What were the factors that influenced your decision making when considering postgraduate study?

My decision regarding the chosen programme was influenced by many conversations with alumni of maritime programmes offered by schools in Europe. However, the location of the school was also significant. As it is known, London is a maritime hub on international area, therefore the choice was narrowed to capital city of England.

City, University of London became obvious choice after considering lectures and their experience. Facilities such as library, gym, canteen and the student centre which provide help in areas such as mental health or job seeking. Additionally, the financial aspect, meaning tuition and other costs were also taken under consideration while in the decision making process.

What were, if any, the main challenges that affected your decision about postgraduate study? How did you overcome them?

Since English is not my first language, it was a challenge to use it at an academic level. However, with the help from lecturers and other students I was able to overcome this issue.

What has been your student experience at City so far?

I am positively surprised, how well the first week of study was organised, in terms of campus tour, information given by lecturers and alumni on official meetings etc. Moreover, I am grateful for the job centre, mental health department and student representative meetings. Because of these, my experience at City as a new student has been great.

How studying a postgraduate degree has helped you develop personally and professionally?

Definitely being surrounded by many ambitious people from all around the world has improved my self-confidence and motivated me to give 110%, not only in terms of studying but also in terms of connecting with people.

What skills and knowledge do you think the course has helped you develop?

I definitely improved my organisational skills, linguistic ability and general knowledge about the shipping industry.

What opportunities and experiences City has offered you during your course?

I was able to participate in many maritime events, ports and maritime organisations trips, including Lloyd’s Register and IMO. I also was given the opportunity to speak with many experience ship-owners, maritime lawyers and shipping professionals during guests lectures.

What advice would you give to people thinking about postgraduate study? What would you have liked to know then that you know now?

My advice would be investment in your education is always a good decision. The process of studying might be hard and demanding, nevertheless the final result brings joy, pride and increases your self-confidence.

What are your career plans once you have completed your postgraduate degree?

My plan is simple. Apply for a job in London, get it and work-hard towards a managerial position in the shipping industry.

How do you think City has equipped you for the next stage in your career journey?

After completion of my postgraduate degree, I will be equipped with respected education and great relations with people who I might meet during my shipping career.
