Kirstan teaches on The Novel Studio year-long short course.
Kirstan’s first novel, Dona Nicanora’s Hat Shop, was based on material gathered in Bolivia while researching for her PhD in anthropology and international development. Her interest in anthropology is driven by the same fascination that underpins her writing: to understand the world from different viewpoints and to gain the ‘insider’s perspective’ in different situations and contexts. As a consequence, much of her work material has found its way into her writing.
In the three years she has been teaching at City, a good number of students have secured agents as a result of the end-of-year reading of their work.
