Sila Uysal is a City Law School student who completed her LLM in 2014.
What course did you study at City?
I completed an LLM in International Commercial Law with a focus on Maritime Law and Energy Law.
Where are you working now?
I am working in a leading international law firm’s London office.
Why did you choose to study at City?
I chose to study at City because City was the only school in the UK (and perhaps in Europe!) where I could complete an LLM combining Maritime Law and Energy Law, my two areas of interest.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
I really enjoyed writing my dissertation. It is priceless to be able to make such a comprehensive research in your areas of interest and make a point that could potentially be used in the legal sector or in business. A successful law firm has already asked me to share my dissertation with them.
What was your favourite module and why?
I had two favourite modules, Marine Insurance and Global Energy Policy & Law. They were taught by excellent lecturers who had great experience in their fields and that makes a real difference in the legal studies. You basically learn law from attorneys who worked in various cases forming today's case-law.
What was the highlight of your time at City?
Being selected by the University to represent it in a national annual Arbitration moot competition in International Commercial Law & Maritime Law and scoring the top marks in the round I competed at were surely the highlights of my time at City.
What have you done after graduating from City?
I worked for a few months in the Energy sector before I got a job in the International Arbitration group of a preeminent international law firm’s London office.
How has City helped you get to where you are today?
A tailored LLM earned from a school with a great reputation like City, University of London, has certainly been a valuable asset until now. This LLM perfectly tied together my previous studies and my international experience.
City has also helped me to get where I am today by offering great connections and experienced professors who were ready to provide me with advice, guidance and recommendation when I was looking for opportunities.
