Shruti is an MEng Mechanical Engineering graduate who received an award for excelling in a work placement at a prestigious firm.
Why did you decide to apply to study at City?
City has an excellent Engineering department and facilities, the feedback from students in things like the NSS (National Student Survey) really made it stand out. It had a good reputation but also lots of connections with industry. It also showed a strong research background, which is always interesting to learn about. Another key factor was that the course is accredited by the IMechE which means that I will be able to apply for Chartership after gaining some more industry experience after my graduation.
What were the most important resources for you in helping you to make a decision?
The prospectus and course handbook were important resources that helped make my decision. The thorough breakdown of modules and information from previous students on their placements and varied industrial experience showcased the course and made it stand out in my mind. I didn't get a chance to attend an Open Day but I managed to talk to a few current students and they loved the course, which helped me to decide!
What was your favourite thing about studying at City?
I have really enjoyed my time here at City, studying here has helped me realise that Engineering is definitely what I want to do and it's given me the resources to hopefully achieve the career I want. The lecturers and staff are fantastic, you get the chance to network with industry professionals and you also get to meet like-minded people you'll study with for several years.
What kind of things were you involved in outside of your course?
I was on the City University Women's Badminton team for two years and also use the new CitySport gym frequently. I've been a Widening Participation tutor as well for three years (which is fantastic!), where I tutor Mathematics and English mainly in primary and secondary schools. I also go to the Student Union events held by the various clubs and societies on site - we have a fantastic new Student Union area with a bar and cafe to choose from.
Have you had the opportunity to do any work experience, placements or study abroad?
I chose to apply for placements between by third and fourth year of study, though you can also choose to do this between your second and third year as well. I had lots of help from the CREU (Corporate Relations & Employability Unit) and the Careers service at City who have a dedicated team for the Department of Engineering. As well as creating a CV and going through the various tests and interviews, they help you with networking events and summer internships. I did my year-long placement with GE Aviation in Southampton and got to work alongside top engineers from GE, Airbus, Bombardier and other companies.
Shruti has since won the 2017 Dean's Award for Professional Excellence for her work placement.
