Jamie studied for a master's degree in Food Policy at City, University of London, and graduated in 2015.
Jamie took the Masters course after his first degree in nutrition, partly for personal development but mainly to help strengthen Food Nation, the social enterprise he had set up in Newcastle. Food Nation tackles diet-related ill health by providing cooking lessons and food education, at its own cooking school and in community settings. Jamie did the Masters by distance learning. He says it helped him to see food issues in a completely different light, and showed how he and his team could have an impact on policy as well as on the streets of Byker.
Food Nation has helped Newcastle City Council write its first Food Plan and has opened a takeaway restaurant that will demonstrate how this much-maligned sector can be sustainable, as well as generating some income for the project.
