Florence is a BMus Music graduate from the School of Communication & Creativity. She plays violin, keyboards and sings in various bands. She graduated in 2018.
Can you tell us a bit about what you're doing now?
I am working in music publishing for Kassner Associated Publishers in London. Since joining the company, I have been involved in sync pitching, marketing, copyright and A&R work. It has been an exciting year for my career as I have been to some wonderful industry events, talent scouted at festivals such at The Great Escape, started the company e-newsletter and met some wonderful songwriters and artists such as Junior (“Mama Used To Say” 1982), Frida Amundsen (“There For You” with Gorgon City, MK, #1 Billboard Dance Charts Songs) and Nate from the Jungle Brothers whom I met at Kassner’s 75th Anniversary dinner in collaboration with PRS for Music. To kick off 2020 I have started getting involved in setting up co-writing sessions for songwriters and finding new talent for signings.
Why did you decide to study at City, and how did it help you get to where you are today?
I decided to study at City because of the diverse range of modules you can take and the wide variety of musical studies you can explore. I joined with the intension of focussing on classical performance and ended up doing my major project in film composition. I feel that the music course at City allowed room for me to find out what my true aspirations were.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I enjoyed meeting so many wonderful lecturers that really inspired me and helped me with my projects, providing support and advice whenever I needed it.
Were there any lecturers who particularly inspired you?
Laudan Nooshin and Miguel Mera in particular, but every lecturer made lessons entertaining and interesting.
What are your long-term career plans?
I plan to carry on working in the creative side of music publishing.
Do you have any advice for someone who might be considering this course?
Always make the most out of the connections you make during your time at uni and don’t be afraid to ask your lecturers for help!
