Alex studied for a master's degree in Musicology at City, University of London, and graduated in 2015.
Can you tell us a bit about what you're doing now?
I’m currently writing freelance for a variety of publications – Songlines, Sounds and Colours, Pigeons and Planes – teaching piano at music schools, and preparing PhD applications.
Why did you decide to study at City, and how did it help you get to where you are today?
If truth be told I chose City (initially for my Undergraduate) since they had the better sandwiches on their open day than another institution I was considering! Having enjoyed my UG course so much, it seemed to make sense to continue my endeavours at City. The teaching staff have always been incredibly helpful and sympathetic to my goals.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
I particularly enjoyed the Interdisciplinarity and Collaborative Process module. Being able to speak with industry professionals, and see first-hand the difficulties and potentialities that emerge when engaging in cross-media projects was highly rewarding.
Were there any lecturers who particularly inspired you?
Am I allowed to say all of them? Well, it must be said that I had substantial support throughout the writing process of my dissertation from Dr Miguel Mera. When my goals felt out of reach, he was able to reassure me and point my work in refreshing directions.
What are your long term career plans?
I’m intending to continue into doctoral study, focusing on the multi-faceted performance avenues for grime music, and their implications on the creative process.
Do you have any advice for someone who might be considering a Music MA?
Do it! The preparatory skills for further research – that you receive in the first term – combined with the varied and enticing modules on offer in the second, are unrivalled.
