About
Overview
Sam Penry - MA PGCert BSc(Hons) FHEA MAcadMEd, is an experienced HCPC registered diagnostic radiographer and university lecturer within the School of Health and Psychological Sciences (SHPS).
He has formerly held the positions of programme director and clinical director for the radiography (diagnostic imaging) programme at City, University of London. He also held the role as admissions tutor for two BSc (Hons) programmes - Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy & Oncology, where he was responsible for strategic decisions, leadership and management on matters relating to admissions and recruitment.
Sam is recognised across his profession. Some of his notable achievements include becoming the youngest recipient of the prestigious 'United Kingdom, Radiographer of the Year Award' (2017) by the professional body, the Society and College of Radiographers. He has also received the 'Enhancement of student experience award' for his teaching (2020, 2021, 2022) and has received several commendations from the student union (2020), CEO of the Mid and South Essex NHS Trusts (2016, 2017) and service-users of the NHS (2011-2018).
Prior to joining City in 2018, he worked at Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust for seven years, where he took on a number of roles and responsibilities. Whilst predominately working as a Computed Tomography (CT) specialist within the radiology department, he joined a project to become the first diagnostic radiographer to coordinate the Multi Disciplinary Diagnostic Centre (MDC) for the vague symptoms cancer pathway in the UK. His 'pioneering role' within this innovative project allowed him to independently perform patient consultations, put patients onto the pathway, request and perform CT imaging, organise and discuss patients at MDT meetings and allowed him to give patients their results. Under IR(ME)R legislation he was recognised as being a referrer as well as being both an operator and practitioner.
Over the years he has published research articles on CT and has also written trust policy on CT Intravenous (IV) contrast administration. He also works as an expert reviewer for Cancer Research UK and has held positions at the Society of Radiographers. He has also contributed to the radiography profession, as a Academic Review Panel Member (For Clark's Positioning in Radiography Textbook) and helped in the development and validation process for the 'Access to HE Diploma - Radiography' qualification as a validation panel member for Gateway qualifications.
Whilst Sam teaches across all year groups at City, he is the module leader for the RD3034 Image Interpretation module, RD3036 Management & Advancement of Radiographic Practice module and #RadInd Radiography Induction module.
