About
Overview
Sally is a Speech and Language Therapist with expertise of working with children and young people with complex special educational and healthcare needs. She joined the School of Health Sciences in 2014 as a Lecturer in Speech and Language Therapy. She completed her PGCert in Academic Practice in 2015 and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Sally has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in London for 19 years. She specialises in working with children with complex needs across the age range. Her work has included support regarding eating and drinking difficulties (dysphagia), alternative and augmentative communication (AAC), Autism and a range of neurodevelopmental disabilities. She is a registered Makaton regional tutor.
Sally was a committee member of the UK Swallowing Research Group (UKSRG) for six years until February 2020, and continues to curate their Twitter handle. She is a Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT) Research Champion and a working party member of the Research Support Network, @ReSNetSLT.
Sally is the co-lead for City Health within the Division of Language and Communication Science. She offers the Makaton Foundation Workshop through City Health, a signing and symbol system for people with communication difficulties which will be updated soon to the new course.

Research areas
Sally has carried out research into healthcare professionals views on supporting families to decide about gastrostomy tube feeding.
She supervises a range of student research projects, often cross-disciplinary, including dietetics and physiotherapy.
She enrolled as a doctoral research student in October 2020 after being awarded a Barts Charity N/AHP Clinical Doctoral Fellowship. The research project aims to develop a toolkit to improve the Safety, Efficiency and Enjoyment of Mealtimes of children with neurodevelopmental dysphagia for Speech & Language Therapists and family carers to use together (not as simple as it may SEEM).
