About

Overview

Radu Jianu is a Lecturer in Visualization and Visual Analytics at the City's giCentre where he seeks to understand how people make sense of and learn from digital visual content. To this end he uses and creates novel methodologies that build on eye-tracking and user-centered experimentation, and works with researchers in other domains to discover how to facilitate novel insights into visual information consumption in practice.

Radu received a PhD in computer science, with an emphasis on data visualization, from Brown University, USA. Before joining the giCentre, Radu was an assistant professor at Florida International University. Radu publishes regularly in high-impact visualization venues such as InfoVis and Vast, Eurovis, and TVCG.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Computer Science, Brown University, USA, 2012
  • MSc in Computer Science, Brown University, United States, 2007
  • Diploma in Engineering, Polytechnic University of Timisoara, Romania, 2005

Employment

  • Lecturer, City, University of London, 2016 – present
  • Assistant Professor, Florida International University, Aug 2012 – Jun 2016

Languages

English (can read, write, speak, understand spoken and peer review), German (can read, write, speak and understand spoken) and Romanian; Moldavian; Moldovan (can read, write, speak, understand spoken and peer review).

Teaching

Programming in Java (IN1007)
Cognition and Technologies (INM314)

In the past I've taught courses on Human Computer Interaction, Principles of Programming Languages, and Data Visualization

Research

My research is focused on Visualisation, Visual Analytics, and Human Computer Interaction. Broadly, I'm interested in understanding how people explore, think with, and learn from digital visual content and data, and in creating novel methods that can support such activities. I investigate novel approaches that build on eye-tracking and user-study experimentation, and work with researchers in domains such as construction, architecture, and biology to discover how to facilitate novel insights into visual information consumption in practice. At the same time, I explore the interactive use of eye-tracking to create adaptive, gaze-contingent visualisations, and support the guided exploration of large data spaces.
