About

Overview

Professor Stosic graduated in mechanical engineering at the University of Sarajevo. He then obtained an MSc at the University of Zagreb followed by a doctorate at the University of Sarajevo where he continued as a member of staff. There, as a result of successive promotions, he became both professor of Applied Thermodynamics and Deputy Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In parallel with this appointment, he held the post of Head of the Thermo engineering Department at the Institute of Process, Power and Environmental Engineering in Sarajevo.

As a result of the war in former Yugoslavia, he took up a research appointment at City University in 1992 to investigate the performance of two-phase expanders. This work led to his appointment as Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Positive Displacement Compressor Technology at City University in 1995 where he established the Centre for Positive Displacement Compressor Technology.

Professor Stosic has carried out research work on a range of applications of heat and fluid flow including boilers, furnaces and compressors. Arising from this work, he is the author and co-author of over 90 refereed publications and more than 100 major industrial reports, a textbook on computers in engineering which ran to 3 impressions in 4 years, and a major text on boilers and furnaces with 2 editions in 5 years. In 1998 he was awarded the ImechE Bernard Hall Prize.

Award

  • Geothermal Resources Council, California, USA (2004) 2004 Geothermal Resources Council Best paper
Geothermal Resources Council Best paper, California, USA, for paper "An Improved System for Power Recovery from Higher Enthalpy Liquid Dominated Fields" with I.K. Smith and N. Stosic

Research

Research interests

- Mathematical modelling and computer simulation of thermal and fluid flow processes, including turbulence models
- Experimental methods for investigating the performance of thermal machinery and systems, especially of positive displacement compressors and boilers
- The application of analytical and experimental techniques to the design of positive displacement compressors, boilers, furnaces and pipe networks
- Industrial investigations of large scale thermal power plants

Research students

Suraj Abdan

Attendance: Apr 2017 – present, part-time

Thesis title: Investigation of Electrically Driven Air Screw Compressor Plant

Role: 2nd Supervisor

Further information: The performance of a packaged electrically driven screw compressor depends upon a number of factors. The most important of these are the rotor and casing design, cooling and lubrication and part load control. Each of these has both a positive and a negative influence and the aim of this project is to develop a method to optimise the performance to cost ratio of the whole system, over the entire operating range by optimising all these effects simultaneously.

Mohammad Arjaneh

Attendance: Jan 2013 – Apr 2015, full-time

Thesis title: Experimental investigation of the multiphase flow at the suction of screw compressor for validation of calculation results

Role: 1st Supervisor

Further information: To determine flow characteristic at the inlet of screw compressor by means of modern measuring methods and to integrate obtained results with predicted values in the common calculation suite.

Date of start 01 Dec 2012
