About

Overview

In 2020-21, Mary Ann was appointed Professor of Creative Practice, Department of English, School of Arts and Social Sciences. She served as the School's Associate Dean (Student Experience) in 2017-21. She served as a Panel Member for the Office for Students in the 2018 and 2019 Subject TEF Pilots, and chaired City's TEF Steering Group.

A founding member of the executive board for the University's Centre for Creativity in Professional Practice, which was launched in 2009 and is based at the Beyes Business School, Mary Ann leads the ‘Creativity and the Creative Industries’ module for the interdisciplinary Masters in Innovation, Creativity and Leadership. She continues to teach on City's Publishing MAs, which she led from 2006-17. She drew on the consistent success of these programmes in the design of City's BA English, launched in 2016-17, which also combines research excellence with modules and assignments which inform and support the students' career aspirations.

Mary Ann serves as both an External Examiner and External Validator. She represented the Association of Publishing Education as a panel member to redefine the National Occupational Standards for Publishing in 2012. Her research has two strands: publishing history, with a special focus on academic publishing and the impact of digitisation; and pedagogical research focused on the role and impact of experiential and arts-based learning in professional and management education. She is a former Director of Methuen & Co Ltd and Deputy Publisher, Routledge.
