Overview
Lorna Ryan joined City University of London in May 2008 as a Research Manager for the European Social Survey Infrastructure Preparatory Phase. Previously she was a Senior Researcher at National University of Ireland Galway (2004-2006) and a Development Centre Research Manager (social science) at Dublin Institute of Technology (2000-2003).
She has been involved in EU social and research programmes (ESF & Framework Programmes) since 1994 in research, management and gender expert capacities.
She gained her PhD (Sociology) from the University of Kent and LLM (International Intellectual Property Law) from Brunel University. She is a registered data protection practitioner (Certified Practitioner - Data Protection (PC-DP) and PC-GDPR). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK. She was a member of Senate Research Ethics Committee (SREC) from 2008, Deputy Chair (2017 - 2019) and Acting Chair for the academic year 2019-2020.
Research
Dr Ryan's research publications have been in the areas of research methodology and substantive areas of research include: social aspects of HIV/AIDS; gender and labour market participation; social research ethics and most recently, gender and science careers.
She has lectured on social research methods; research ethics; evaluation methods and social policy. She has contributed to the Department's undergraduate course: News & Society (2008/2009; 2009/2010), News & Documentary (2010) and New Media Challenges (2011/2012). Current research interests include EU research policy; mainstreaming gender equality and science communication.
Dr Ryan is a member of the university's Senate Research Ethics Committee (2009 -present) and its Gender Equality Working Group (2015) Between 2008 and 2014 she was a co-opted Council member of UACES - (University Association for Contemporary European Studies)
