About

Overview

Dr Ladan Hashemi has internationally recognised expertise in the application of advanced quantitative research methods in both social science and epidemiology, with an emphasis on the intersection of gender, domestic violence, and its harms to health and society. She joined City, University of London as a Research Fellow in Health Science with the Violence and Society Centre in Feb 2022. She has a joint appointment with the University of Auckland, New Zealand where she has worked as a Senior Research Fellow, the lead investigator of an Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, and previously as the lead analyst of the 2019 New Zealand Family Violence Study since 2017 (ongoing). Over the years, Ladan has developed her research portfolio of highly impactful and policy-relevant work, and proven her ability to generate research funding and lead on collaborative research projects. Ladan has supervised numerous master's and doctoral students to completion (41 students) and is currently leading a research project funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Social Development exploring the immediate positive childhood experiences that can offset the detrimental impacts of adverse childhood experiences on children’s wellbeing.
The five principal areas of research expertise that Ladan is taking forward at City include: (i) application of advanced quantitative methods to analyse trajectories and pathways between gender, inequalities, and violence; (ii) accounting for the contribution of violence to health inequalities and harm to society (iii) improving pathways to violence prevention and healing from violence; (iv) providing population-based and cross-country evidence to inform a theory of change; and (v) accounting for the impact of cross-country micro-level factors on variation in violence rates across the globe.
Ladan is currently leading two major threads (global and life course), co-leading a City-wide working group (Quantitative analyses), and contributing significantly to two other threads (Inequalities and Mental Health) within VISION, a multi-institution consortium funded by UK Prevention Research Partnership, UKRI/MRC/PRP.
Recent work has focused on the gender patterns in the prevalence of interpersonal violence, intergenerational impacts of violence exposure, Adverse Childhood Experiences and their short and long terms consequences, population trends in the prevalence of intimate partner violence, resiliency in the context of violence and trauma, and the intersection of gender, disability, and violence.
