About

Overview

Jo Verhoeven is Reader in Phonetics at the Division of Language and Communication Science. He joined City, University of London in 2006 and he is a specialist in acoustic phonetics and the phonetic description of motor speech disorders.

Jo studied Germanic Languages and Linguistics at the University of Antwerp, Neurolinguistics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Phonetics at the University of Edinburgh. He has a strong interest in speech production processes and the neurolinguistic description of motor speech disorders. He has worked as a lecturer at Edinburgh University and Oxford University. He then held positions at Aarhus Universitet (Denmark), Hasselt University (Belgium) and Antwerp University (Belgium).

Research

Research Overview

Jo's main research interests are tone and intonation, regional variation in the phonetic characteristics of Belgian Dutch and speech pathology with a specific emphasis on the relationship between Foreign Accenty Syndrome, Dysarthria and Apraxia of Speech. Recently, my research focus has developed into the phonetics of motor speech disorders and the planning of the speech production process.

Further information: Husen Owaida is currently carrying out a research project under Jo's supervision. During this project, she has developed an articulation test for Syrian Arabic to assess speech sound development and phonological error patterns in typically developing children.
