About

Overview

I am a Professor of Visualization at the giCentre with research expertise in interactive cartography and its use in data visualization.

The main body of work is reported in a series of more than 20 papers published in IEEE Transactions in Visualization and Computer Graphics since 2007.

I serve on the steering committee of IEEE Information Visualization and was papers chair in 2012 and 2013 and conference chair in 2014.

My research has been funded by the European Union and various UK research councils (AHRC, ESRC, EPSRC, JISC). I have given keynote lectures at the AutoCarto, GIS Research UK and GIScience conferences.

I lead several modules in which we use graphics to make sense of data at City, including INM451 Business Intelligence and Analytics, EPM948 Communication and Presentation and SG2047 Visualizing Society. I really enjoy contributing to the year 1 undergraduate Coding BootCamp and am a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

My colleagues and I were awarded the 'Best Paper' prize at the GIS Research UK meetings in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010, 'Honorable Mentions' at IEEE InfoVis in 2009, 2010, 2016 and 2018 and prizes in the IEEE VAST Challenge in 2009 and 2010 for innovative and effective visualization work.

You can find out where I am, what I am up to and when I might be free by consulting my online diary.

Teaching Responsibilities

I teach on a number of modules at City, usually with a geographic and visualization bias! These include the Coding BootCamp for our year 1 undergraduates, INM451 Business Intelligence and Analytics, SG2047 Visualizing Society which is part of the QSTEP programme in social science and EPM948 Communication and Presentation.
I am personal tutor to students on our MSc Data Science and BSc Computer Science courses.
I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects. These usually involve designing, developing and evaluating visualization methods. They are often undertaken with external clients as we explore data sets and the ways in which interactive visualization can help them understand their data. Excellent projects can result in academic publications - and this is always an important but ambitious aim.

Awards and Recognition

I have won grants and awards at City for teaching including an 'Innovations in Teaching Award' a 'Teaching & Learning Development Grant' and a 'Learning Development Project Award'. I have published papers on education in visualization.
In 2005 I was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy.

Research

Research Interests

I am Professor of Visualization in the Department of Computer Science at City, University of London, where I co-direct the giCentre.

My research focuses on designing visual methods and tools for exploring, analysing and presenting information with an emphasis on geographic information. I design, develop and evaluate novel dynamic maps that help generate insights from data and communicate trends in phenomena from a diverse range of domains.

As such I have interests in Cartography, Information Visualization, Data Visualization, Design, GIScience and Human Computer Interaction. I have developed software and ideas that explore cartographic design possibilities for geovisualization. This includes software, such as 'cdv' and 'panoraMap', and novel exploratory views, such as geowigs, geo-centric parallel coordinates plots, spatially ordered treemaps, ODmaps, BallotMaps, AttributeSignatures and FAVVEs. 'cdv' - the cartographic data visualizer demonstrates my early ideas and appears in the Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics and Data Visualization.

The main body of my work is reported in 18 papers published in IEEE Transactions in Visualization and Computer Graphics between 2007 and 2016.

Service to Research Community

I am member of the Steering Committee of IEEE Information Visualization having been papers co-chair in 2012 & 2013 and conference chair in 2014 where I was also involved in organising a workshop and a bike ride.
I regularly review papers for a variety of publications in the GIScience, visualization and broader information domains, including: the International Journal of Geographical Information Science, Computers and GeoSciences, the Journal of Documentation, JASIST, IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, Information Visualization and Computational Statistics. I am a member of the editorial boards of Computers Environment and Urban Systems and The Cartographic Journal and the ESRC review college.

Keynotes, Invited Lectures and Funding

I have given keynotes at the AutoCarto, GISRUK and GIScience conferences.
I have given invited talks in the UK, US and Europe, including a Distinguished Lecture at the University of British Columbia.

I have had research funded by various UK research councils - the AHRC, the ESRC, the EPSRC and JISC - and the EU - I am involved in the FP7 funded VisMaster consortium. I have worked a range of collaborators including local authorities, the Department for Communities and Local Government, EDINA - the National Academic Data Centre and industrial partners, such as Thomson Reuters and the energy suppliers E.ON.

Examples and News

Recent papers, videos and news items that describe giCentre research are available online through an open access repository and vimeo channel and the gicentre pages.

Students at City

Students at City can call by to discuss any of this stuff, taught modules or project ideas during weekly office hours in term time - alternatively check my online diary and suggest a time when I am in the office [O] to meet.
