About
Overview
Professor Debra Salmon, Dean of the School of Health Sciences, joined City, University of London in September 2015. She is Professor of Community Health and completed a BA in Sociology at Warwick University, followed by an MSc in Policy Studies at Bristol University in1996. During the 1990’s she also completed her health visitor and nurse teacher training at the University of Wales College of Medicine, where she worked as a health visitor and lecturer in Cardiff. In 1998, she moved to UWE, Bristol where she completed a doctorate focused on understanding how mothers and teenage daughters living in low income families understand and respond to risk, in the context of negotiating independence.
In 2010 Debra was awarded a Chair in Community Health Nursing and was an invited expert member of the HEE/NIHR ICA Clinical Lectureship and Senior Clinical Lectureship: Expert Review Panel (2012 to 2016). During her time at UWE, Debra led the South West Region’s HEI response to the Department of Health’s National Health Visitor Implementation Plan (2011-2015) training over 25% of the 4200 new health visitors that were recruited nationally.
Over her career she has been passionate about the role of public health in reducing inequality and improving outcomes for those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds. This is reflected in the wide range of research she has led which highlights the impact of disadvantage on young people in their access to health and social care. This has resulted in recommendations for practice and policy that place young people people’s perspectives centre stage across education, health and social care. Debra employs a wide range of research methodologies, including participatory approaches that include members of communities to actively engage in all aspects of the research from design to dissemination.
Debra’s commitment to education as a mechanism for improving outcomes for children and young people, is demonstrated through her voluntary roles within the governance of primary schools within Bristol and her ongoing educational academic roles within Higher Education. Her contribution to public health was recognised in 2019 when she was made a Fellow through Distinction of the Faculty of Public Health.
For the last twelve years Debra has undertaken a significant number of leadership and management roles shaping the future of health care professional education. She is a Principle Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an active member of the Council of Deans. During her time at City Debra has been committed to leading the School of Health Sciences and wider University in the endeavour to prioritise support for young people from widening participation backgrounds. This is with the aim of ensuring all young people are able to meet their personal aspirations and improve outcomes for themselves, their families and wider communities.
Currently her research centres on two main areas: health professional education and young women’s health and wellbeing. The focus of this work is currently the nursing workforce; how do we successfully reduce turnover rates of early career nurses both pre and post Covid 19? This is a project funded by the Burdett Trust. Debra is also leading on the evaluation of the implementation of the new nurse associate role, a role focused on widening career development opportunities for those in healthcare roles. She also has recently published work funded by Barts Charity, focussed on teenage mothers, mental and physical health, in addition to exploring young people's interpretations of female genital mutilation in the UK
