About

Overview

Dr Haenschel was awarded a PhD in Psychology from the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience and Behaviour, Imperial College School of Medicine, London, UK. Her PhD research investigated human fast cortical oscillations during auditory change detection using EEG.

Subsequent to her PhD Dr Haenschel worked as a post-doctoral research fellow and later as a principal investigator in a multidisciplinary research unit jointly affiliated to the Max-Planck Institute for Brain Research and the University Clinic of Psychiatry, Frankfurt, Germany.

Whilst working in Frankfurt she also successfully trained to be a chartered clinical psychologist (with a predominant focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Following this she spent two years at the Department of Psychology, Bangor University as a Senior Research Fellow. In January 2011 Dr Haenschel took up a permanent position at City University London.

Research

Dr Haenschel's research interest is in applying behavioural measures, neurophysiological techniques and functional imaging during cognitive tasks in both normal and clinical populations.

Specifically, her research is based around the study of memory in healthy controls and people with cognitive dysfunctions using EEG and fMRI, especially the role of oscillations and neural synchrony in cognition and their relevance for cognitive dysfunctions and pathophysiology. Recently, she has been particularly interested in the importance of early stimulus encoding on visual working memory performance.

Her work is currently supported by a NARSAD Young Investigator Grant from the Brain & Behaviour Research Foundation and by a John Grace QC PhD Scholarship from the Schizophrenia Research Fund and Mental Health Research UK.
