Course structure and content

Each module consists of 6 assignments and two 30-minute telephone or email tutorials.

The modules follow the pattern of the IoLET’s examination:

  • Module 1 consists of three generalist papers (corresponding to Unit 1 in the examination) and three papers from the semi-specialist options Technology/Business/Literature (corresponding to Unit 2 in the examination)
  • Module 2 consists of three generalist papers and three papers from the semi-specialist options Science/Social Science/Law (corresponding to Unit 3 in the examination).
  • Module 3 consists of two generalist papers, two papers from Unit 2 and two papers from Unit 3.

Students may to some degree negotiate their preferred mixture of semi-specialist papers with their tutor in each module, depending on which domain they are planning to choose in the exam. Students will receive feedback on each translation and will have an opportunity to discuss progress and strategies for further development in the tutorials.

Please note that students bear the cost of telephone tutorials and are responsible for ensuring that their email is fully operational.

All assignments must be completed in term time and to the deadlines set by the course tutor.

Modules 1 and 2 are designed to develop students' translation skills with a view to examination requirements, as well as to good professional practice. While the courses are mainly based on practical translation work, relevant theoretical aspects of translation are discussed in the study notes, and the theory module is available for a more in-depth study of practice-oriented translation theory.

Module 3 is designed for students who have registered to sit IoLET Diploma in Translation examinations the following January. It will facilitate the further development of students' translation skills, their awareness of translation challenges and their ability to work autonomously towards a professional standard. The course aims to build up final impetus, prepare students for the pressure of the examinations and ensure that translation skills, as well as examination technique, are fully polished.
