Systems & Control

Research Centre for Systems & Control

Created in 2001, this centre is an evolution of earlier activities in Systems Science at City (in the 1960s) and the well-established research base in the Systems & Control field, dating from the late 1970s.

The Control activities of the centre were expanded in the Systems area with new activities in Operational Research, Reliability, Risk, Systems Engineering and more recently by activities in Communication Networks, Cyber Security, Machine Vision, and Intelligent Systems. The centre's activities address the challenge of complexity in engineering and general processes and aim to extend the systems and control approaches to challenging problems in the Design, Operations and Management of Industrial Processes, as well as new fields of applications such as Energy, Transport, Environment and Security. The research programme is supported by research in Applied Mathematics in areas of Mathematical Systems Theory, Operational Research and Computations.

Vision

The Design for Management of Complexity is viewed as the great challenge to technological progress. The complexity of emerging applications from diverse fields necessitates holistic and innovative solutions founded on the multi-disciplinary systems approach. This has to be based by development of the fundamentals in Systems, Control, Measurement, Information, Modelling, Mathematical Methods and Computations, supported by enabling technologies and motivated by the challenges of emerging applications.

Objectives

Management of Complexity in Design and Decision Making of Engineering and emerging application areas by:

A quadrocopter droneControl Theory and Design is a well-established area of research activity of the centre and is centred around the development structural methodologies based on algebraic, geometric and algebro-geometric methods on one hand and robust H-∞ methodologies. The central idea running through is the role of "system structure" in issues such as the analysis and design of control systems and the understanding of formation, evolution of system structure and resulting properties within the framework of the integrated systems design. The structural methodologies are complemented by the development of robust H-∞ optimisation methods for design and system model simplification. The term "system structure" is linked to system invariants and the basic topology of interconnections expressed in terms of graphs and structured models. The adopted philosophy is that "structure" defines the central features which determine the nature of resulting system properties and the system potential to achieve a number of objectives, and control design is then performed using optimization methods on structured control schemes. Current research is focused on the study of complex systems by examining design issues in "Integrated System Design" and "Systems of Systems" system paradigms.

Integrated Systems Design provides the motivation for the development of methodologies addressing problems in Structure Evolving Systems (SES). Research in the area of System of Systems (SoS) focuses on their classification and the characterization of the notion of "systems play" that is central to their characterization. Important area of complexity is linked to the large dimensionality of systems and applications considered are in the areas of power systems, process systems and transport. Issues considered relate to Large Scale System Decomposition, Structured Model Reduction, and Design of Decentralisation Structures.

Multi-Agent Systems & Intelligent Methods

Research in this area focuses in the areas of Multi-Agent Systems and Intelligent Methods. Current Research activities involve: Adaptive Dynamic Programming for Smart Energy Systems, Data Mining techniques for Transport and Market Forecasting, Machine Learning techniques for cyber security and 3D vision, Computational modeling in prediction and reward learning in people with ASD, Formalization of emergence in Systems of Systems and Multi-Agent Co-ordination and Communication

Network Theory

The problem of redesigning systems by changing elements, topology, organization is a major challenge where systems and control theory have a major role to play. Network redesign is a process involving an evolution to system structure under different types of transformations. A special case considered here is the redesign of passive electric networks which aims to change the natural dynamics of the network (natural frequencies) by modification of the network. A control theoretic framework for addressing issues of systems redesign is examined here.

The work on Supply Chains aims to analyze dynamic phenomena arising in supply chain models, driven by stochastic inputs and examine the characterization of the "bullwhip effect" (demand amplification).

The fundamental work in the areas of Control and Engineering systems leads to the development of methodologies, concepts and tools which are used in the study of problems in specific applications areas which include Transport, Energy, Supply Chains and Industrial Automation. Research in such areas is linked to EU-funded projects. Specifically:

  • The Control of unstable vehicle dynamics deals complex nonlinear dynamical systems such as rotorcrafts and high performance motorbikes. For helicopter, unstable behaviour involves the design of a high fidelity computer models enabling the study and understanding of existing pathological dynamics. In motorcycle dynamics we examine the development of mechanical steering compensators to improve the dynamic behaviour of high-performance motorcycles.
  • Process Control has been a long-standing activity supported by a number of EU projects, where the development of control structures for large scale process systems has been an area of interest. Current work deals with the development of modelling, measurement and control for Powder Coating Manufacturing process within an EU project.
  • Research in Power Systems deal with problems in Transmission and distribution networks, distributed generation, lightning, and embedded power systems using AI techniques and Artificial Neural Nets. Of special interest is the study of partitioning of systems (islanding methodologies) which is linked to the study of protection of power systems. Robust H-∞ methodologies are central to the development of model reduction techniques.

The complexity of today's problems - from financial markets to national security - demand more quantitative thinking and better assessments of risk, business, transportation and environmental issues. This requires focus on using systems methodologies, mathematics, statistics, and the tools of engineering to evaluate risks and optimize decision making in complex systems. Manufacturers of capital goods are rapidly transforming themselves into the providers of services where the function of the capital item is sold rather than the item itself. This change demands new ways based on systems, financial engineering and risk analysis to price, manage, and service the resulting contracts.

Major capital projects are also evaluated on the basis of life cycle cost and revenue streams in an uncertain environment. Managing and engineering the uncertainties and risk inherent in such projects and designing appropriate financial instruments and tools to optimize their performance throughout the life cycle is critical. The research in this area is based on Systems Methodologies, Operational Research and it is distinguished by the effort to extend traditional control concepts and tools to the area of management systems. Systems complexity and emergent properties are central issues in this research.

Nowadays we witness the need for engineering type solutions to a variety of non-engineering applications. Responding to such challenges requires development of areas of Systems Theory and Systems Engineering, to enable it to cope with the interdisciplinary requirements, such as modeling problems originating from different areas, carrying out analysis and developing relevant solutions. Major challenges emerge in the areas of integrating the physical-operational-business-information-data dimensions of complex systems (referred to as systems integration) as well as addressing the problems of re-engineering large infrastructure systems (referred to as re-engineering) to comply with new requirements. A crucial theme supporting both areas is systems modelling, where development of links between conceptual and formal models of variable complexity is a major challenge. This research is frequently linked with funded projects (EU).

Safety is a human-focused and complex socio-technical issue. The classical view of safety is largely biased towards the causality of hazardous states and failure of products, processes and systems. Our research is focused on a new paradigm for holistic systems assurance, of which, safety performance and security/vulnerability are key aspects. Whilst principally focused on safety assurance, the paradigm is broadly applicable to any facet of a system's performance and goes beyond the current horizons of systems safety landscape and proposes a more inclusive approach and extension of current systems safety domain.

Research in transport systems includes: Traffic engineering, modelling and simulation, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), network reliability, travel demand, Operations Research, travel behaviour, public transport operations, and transport and public realm.

The modern world depends on the efficient running of complex engineered systems to function effectively. Such systems have traditionally covered transport, energy and the other major utilities, but now increasingly the list includes the internet and its associated world-wide web, online banking and shopping, international commerce, and intelligence and security. Complexity is further added through the integration of these systems into themes that support the wealth of nations, governance and socio-economic well-being. Efficient complex systems do not come about by chance; they are designed to evolve to match moving economies either through adaptive processes or by removing ineffective elements and replacing them with new elements. Managing complex systems requires a good knowledge of systems science, computer science, systems analysis systems modelling, control theory and systems engineering. This knowledge must be underpinned by a good understanding of the mathematics involved.

These are exciting times to work in the area of complex systems as the foundation of world economies is more and more underpinned by the integrated nature of engineered systems particularly as social systems merge to form a seamless world. The work on the fundamentals feeds to a number of challenging problems which include Re-engineering of large infrastructure transport systems, Systems Assurance in complex engineering designs, asset management of large projects.

Networks and Cyber Security

Wireless Networks

Representation of the acceleration of light wavesWireless networks and related technology research focuses on Wireless Networks and deals with the development of networking technologies and protocols, which enable the high-speed data exchange users or modern wireless networks development. Research here is focused on the quality of service provision and involves control and optimisation of wireless communication networks in a wide range of wireless network systems, including local and metropolitan wireless networks. The research involves: Optimal scheduling, dynamic clustering: Cooperation and network self-organisation; Heterogeneous "4G" cellular networks, energy network optimisation; Wireless sensor Networks routing. Application of some of the optimisation solutions are found in energy networks.

Radar Systems and Signal Processing

Sophisticated drone technology is now available to everyone as it is becomes affordable and easy to deploy. Whilst this promotes a wide range of leisure and hobbyist activity it also heralds new weapons for terrorists and criminal organisations with possible threats to vital infrastructure. Security services have turned their attention to improving surveillance technology to track drone activity near or above sensitive areas but a problem exists with detecting slow moving very small objects hidden amongst noise and clutter with traditional radar technology. The centre is working with a Cambridge-based UK radar company, Aveillant Ltd, to enhance the signals processing functionality of a new concept radar that has the potential to identify and track all drones. This radar has unique characteristics in that it can survey in all directions at the same time for long periods and hence it possesses the potential to detect most drone activity even with high-levels ground clutter present.

Cryptography, Cyber protection

Research is being undertaken into cryptographic methods used in networked communications. The research, using systems methods, is focused on the integrity of current block and stream ciphers employed to protect both commercial and government communications. A particular focus is to assign a complexity rating to a cipher with a view to assessing the resource required to break the cipher. This complexity approach used links with other systems work undertaken by the university. The research employs recently acquired high-performance computing (HPC) facilities.

Research in network security has particular interests in malware, traffic classification, intrusion detection, and wearable security. Recent research aims to model and analyse strategies in cyber conflicts including warfare and terrorism. Specific research areas include: Cryptography and Cyber Security; Cyber Terrorism and Cyber Warfare; Modelling techniques & behaviour of complex internet systems; Intrusion detection & attack modelling; Intrusion detection & attack modelling.

Collage of graphics related to communicationSystems Theory underpins many aspects of the development of Control Theory and Design and involves the development of Mathematical System Theory for the standard Linear Systems paradigm and the development of the fundamentals for a Control and Systems Framework for the emerging paradigms of Complex Systems. A major activity is the development of the Matrix Pencils algebraic framework for Geometric Control Theory that provides a unifying approach for the study of dynamics, geometric, algebraic and computational aspects of Linear Systems. Open research issues of mathematical nature related to graph evolution, as well as issues of Kronecker structure evolution in variable complexity models are topics related to the theory of Structure Evolving Systems (SES).

Approximate Algebraic Computations

  • Approximate Intersections of varieties & Distance Problems

The area of Algebraic Computations deals with the development of suitable matrix representations of algebraic invariants such as the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD), Least Common Multiple (LCM) of sets of polynomials and their polynomial matrix theory versions and then develop numerically robust techniques for their computation. Of special interest is the introduction of an appropriate framework and tools for the definition of approximate solutions to non-generic computation problems. This research is now extended to the study of approximate matrix GCD and LCM for polynomial and rational matrices. A new area of research has been the development of approximate solutions to Determinantal Assignment Problems which are described as distance problems between varieties in a projective space.

Linear Algebra

Research in areas of Linear Algebra centered around the development of the classical theory of Matrix Pencils and in particular the theory of invariants under special types of transformation groups. The development of matrix pencil theory is now focused on the study of Bilinear-Strict Equivalence and its importance in numerical computations. We study Matrix Equations over PIDs investigate conditions for their solvability and the development of matrix representations that enable the development of computations. The solvability of Exterior Equations is integral part of the study of Determinantal Assignment Problems (DAP). Linear Algebra based conditions are derived based on properties of the Grassmann Matrices.

Optimisation Methods

  • Relaxation Methods for non-convex optimisation

Research on H-∞ optimisation relates to Robust Stabilisation and H-infinity Optimal Control. The work focuses on: (i) combining the H-infinity norm for robust-stability, with other norms; (ii) Development of efficient methods for solving H-infinity and Hankel-norm approximation problems, multiple-objective optimal control problems and algorithms for singular and ill-conditioned systems; (iii) non-convex optimisation problems we seek the development of general methods for breaching the duality gap in NP-hard problems by examining the properties of the dual problem. This approach leads to less conservative designs and efficient computations.

Control of Complex Systems

Project: IAPP GLOW, FP7-Research for SME-2013-1, "New weather-stable low gloss powder coatings based on bifunctional acrylic solid resins and nanoadditives",(2013-2017, City: €575,000); N Karcanias (Principal Investigator (PI)), G Halikias (Co-Investigator (CI)), E Milonidis (CI)

The project aims to develop novel, advanced polymer-based raw and composite materials as well as processing and production technologies, towards new families of powder coatings, i.e. one-shot matt powder coatings, responding at the same time to the industrial requirements for quality improvement at lower cost, production of environmentally friendly materials and shorter development cycles. The project will pursue the generation of multifunctional formulations, based on new bi-functional polymeric binders and new nanoadditives aiming to expand significantly, both in terms of type and final application. The industrial system that will manufacture the new paints requires upgrading of the existing process systems (two industrial partners). Our role is to undertake the challenges of industrial automation by providing expertise in process control, industrial systems, integration in upscalling of processes to the industrial production level. In addition to the technology tasks we deal with the training of our industrial partners by: identifying the specific research and training needs for the scaling up of Laboratory Processes an developing a "Technology Watch" System for the upscaling of the Laboratory results.

Project: CompETe, FP7-Research for SME-2013-1: "Composites Evaluation in aircraft industry through Triplex IR imaging system", (2013-2015, City: €374,400); N Karcanias (PI), G Halikias (CI), Project Coordination

The project aims to develop an advanced non-invasive imaging tool for qualitative and quantitative inspection of composites used primarily but not only in aircraft applications. This novel system will be using automated scanning via the use of a polyarticulated robotic arm equipped with sophisticated and innovative sensors operating in three infrared wavelengths (near, medium and long wave). Novel sensings system are used to acquire images during the non-destructive inspection of composites in the three infrared wavelengths. The automated tool will allow fast and prompt inspection of different composites components in the aerospace industry using Near Infrared Vision, Mid Wave IR Thermography, and Long Wave IR Thermography. The system will incorporate a novel image processing module combining and enhancing the individual inspection capabilities of the three imaging sensors and automatically recognising defects that may be undetectable otherwise. City's role is in the area of signal processing, pattern recognition and overall systems integration of the partial diagnostics tools. We are also acting as Project coordinators.

Engineering Systems

Project: EU: FRAMEWORK 6, Collective Research Project TESS: "Speciality Chemicals Manufacturing SMEs: Toolbox to support Environmental and Sustainable Systems", (2006-2009, City: €460,000). N. Karcanias, G. Halikias

The project aimed to enable European SME manufacturers of Specialty and Fine Chemicals to identify gaps in their current ability to deal with the transition into REACH-compliancy and associated migration to Sustainable Manufacturing. This will be achieved by carrying out background research, to empower them with the protocols, tools and manufacturing methodologies, currently beyond their economic and knowledge horizons, but essential for making this journey. City's involvement was in the area of developing methodology and a Toolbox for the systems, and economic appraisal of alternative chemical supply chains and thus enable SMEs to move cost-effectively to the more sustainable supply chains essential for the future.

Project: CONDUITS-DST: Further development of the CONDUITS Key Performance Indicators (Kapsch TrafficCom) (2012-2015) I. Kaparias

Cities today share common transport problems and objectives with respect to road traffic management, and put great focus on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The project involves the implementation of the FP7 CONDUITS project, the CONDUITS-DST spinoff project, sponsored by Kapsch TrafficCom, extends the CONDUITS framework from a tool for evaluating existing systems to a tool for evaluating future systems by integrating the CONDUITS KPIs with traffic micro-simulation. The outcome is a predictive evaluation tool for road traffic management and ITS, called CONDUITS_DST, which links traffic micro-simulation with other predictive models (emissions, accidents, accessibility etc.). The research provides performance evaluation framework for urban traffic management and ITS in a novel decision support tool, using the output of microscopic and macroscopic traffic simulation tools. City's involvement is in the area of the development of methodologies for predictive evaluation and the conduct of the validation case studies.

Networks and Cyber Security

Project: REACH (Rural broadband intErnet Access using Cooperative mesh networking in wHite space spectrum), EU-India Research and Innovation Partnership, V. Rakocevic

Recently, the Centre has been involved in a successful bid for the project REACH (Rural broadband intErnet Access using Cooperative mesh networking in wHite space spectrum). This project will develop a strong cluster-to-cluster partnership between research centres in the EU and India to develop advanced technical solutions for providing high-speed broadband Internet access in rural India by deploying cooperative mesh networking in the unlicensed (white space) spectrum. The project is supported by the EU-India Research and Innovation Partnership and includes ten partners from India and the EU countries.

Funded collaborations (V. Rakocevic): The Centre has a longstanding collaboration with the T-Systems Research Labs in Germany (since 2006), with several research projects on the operation of WiMAX and LTE networks jointly completed during the last 10 years.

Project: EPSRC: App Collusion Detection (ACID), (2014-2017, City: £280,000), T. Chen (PI)

City is collaborating with Swansea U., Coventry U., and McAfee/Intel to develop new detection methods for Android apps that are capable to colluding together to overcome the permission restrictions in Android smart phones and tablets. Permissions is one of Android's built-in security mechanisms to keep mobile devices safe from malicious apps. However, colluding apps have been able to work together for malicious actions, bypassing permissions, and traditional antivirus software Is not able to detect collusion. McAfee will help to commercialise the new detection methods in their Global Threat Intelligence System. Prof T. Chen is a co-director of the Cyberterrorism Project (www.cyberterrorism-project.org).

Project: A-DAP, Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowships (IEF) Call: FP7-PEOPLE-2012-IEF : "Approximate Solutions of the Determinantal Assignment Problem and distance problems" (2013-2015, City: €309,235) N. Karcanias (PI) and Dr. J. Leventides (Advanced Fellow)

The Determinantal Assignment Problem (DAP) provides an abstract formulation unifying the study of pole, zero assignment of linear systems. DAP is equivalent to finding solutions to an inherently non-linear problem and its determinantal character demonstrates the significance of exterior algebra and classical algebraic geometry. The research aims to provide solutions for non-generic frequency assignment problems and handle problems of model uncertainty. This is achieved by developing robust approximate solutions to the purely algebraic DAP framework and thus transforming existence results and general computational schemes to tools for control design. The research involves the computation of distances between Grassmann and families of Linear varieties, introducing a new robust methodology for Global Linearisation using homotopy theory and finally developing an integrated framework for approximate solutions of DAP.
