Widening Participation
The Student Development and Outreach Team run a variety of widening participation acitivities and schemes to help young people gain access to, benefit from and succeed in higher education.
Young people gain an insight into what it is like to study at university and shows there where it might lead; raising aspirations to succeed, showing them how higher education helps individuals to realise their ambition and supporting young people to reach their potential.
Eligibility
Our activities are targeted at state school students who meet at least one of the following criteria:
- From families where there is no previous history of higher education
- Under represented groups such e.g. white working class males, some BME students
- Student from low income backgrounds or low participation neighbourhoods
- Students in care, or students leaving care
- Students with disabilities
What do we do?
We deliver a large number of activities throughout the year, including:
- Maths tutoring
- School visits to the university from year 6-10
- Masterclasses in Business, Law, Journalism and Engineering for year 12
- Engineering, Business and Law taster days for younger students
- Industry Days providing insight into the world of work direct from employers
- Individual Careers Guidance interviews deliverd by our fully qualified careers advisers
- Careers and progression talks in school
- Careers advisers and City students can attend parents events
- Student Ambassdor outreach programme
- A wide range of summer schools including Engineering, Business, Law, Health, Psychology and Music
