Undergraduate halls of residence Liberty Court

General

This residence is offered exclusively to City, University of London first year undergraduate students in conjunction with Liberty Living, a third party housing provider. Students who are offered accommodation at Liberty Court will sign an agreement with Liberty Living and not with City, University of London, and will therefore be bound by Liberty Living's terms and conditions (PDF) of residence.

Main features

  • 291 furnished single rooms arranged in self-contained cluster flats.
  • Rooms are 12-14 m2 with a mixture of single and small double beds (allocated randomly).
  • The flats are in self-contained groups of three to five single study bedrooms, with shared lounge, kitchen and bathroom facilities.
  • Bedroom furniture includes bed, mattress, wardrobe, desk, chair and bedside cabinet.
  • Kitchens are 15-18 m2 and include dining table & chairs, electric ovens and 4-ring hob/extractor fan, fridge freezer and microwave, shared between two to five people.
  • Bathrooms have shower, toilet, basin and mirror, roughly 4 m2.
  • Accommodation for students with mobility support needs is available.
  • Approximately 10 minutes' walk from City's main buildings.

What is included in the cost of the rent?

What is not included?

  • Telephone bill
  • TV licence (please see the TV Licensing website for information on if you need a license and how to obtain one)
  • Bedding (sheets, pillow, duvet etc.)
  • Cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery in kitchens
  • All halls of residence are self-catered, therefore you are responsible for buying and preparing your own food.

City, University of London recognises that the cost of living and studying in London can be high. In order to make studying at City affordable and accessible to all our undergraduate students, City has introduced an accommodation subsidy to reduce the cost of its undergraduate halls of residence. The subsidised prices listed above will be available from September 2016.

*Please be aware that the prices we offer are artificially low due to the subsidy, rents on the private market are likely to be £50 to £75 higher per week. For more information on private housing please refer to the University of London’s Housing Guide.

Location

Liberty Court London is located in the historical Smithfield district, which still maintains a centuries-old covered market with a gorgeous Victorian facade. The neighbourhoods of Clerkenwell and Barbican, both centres of art and musical activities renowned throughout the City of London, also border Liberty Court, ensuring students enjoy an enriching City life.

You won't need to travel far for food, drink or other necessities. As a central accommodation provider in London, Liberty Court lies close to grocery stores, post offices, stationery shops and more.

Instalment Related

What are the rent instalment dates?

Rent instalment dates for 2016/17 academic year are: 10th September 2016, 10th January 2017 & 4th April 2017.

How many instalments is the rent paid?

Rent is paid in one instalment or in three instalments. The option to pay in 3 instalments is only available to students with a UK-based guarantor.

How much do I need to pay for each instalment?

The amounts of each instalments are: 10th September 2016 £1904, 10th January 2017 £1848 & 4th April 2017 £1848

Can I pay in instalments if I'm an international student?

You can only pay in instalments if you have a UK based guarantor.

Do you need an UK Guarantor to pay instalments?

Yes, you do - all students wishing to pay in instalments must have a UK based guarantor.

What if I don’t have an UK guarantor?

You will then need to pay in one instalment.

Payments

What do I pay to reserve my room?

You will need to pay Liberty Court a £200 deposit to reserve your room. The deposit will be returned to you when your contract ends in full, providing there is no outstanding rent, outstanding charges or damages.

How can I pay for my rent?

You may pay by direct debit, bank transfer, debit/credit card, cheque or cash. The payments are made to Liberty Court and not to City, University of London.

Can I pay by a bank transfer?

Yes you can. For bank details, please contact Liberty Court after you have received your contract.

I can't pay my 1st instalment as I'm waiting for my student loan to be confirmed, can I still move into my room?

If you can provide a letter from Student Loan Finance confirming your payment instalment dates and acceptance of loan you will be able to move in and your payment date re-schedule to mirror the student Loan Finance dates. However, if this is not in place, your first instalment will have to be paid before your arrival date.

Is there a discount if I pay for my accommodation in full?

Yes, if you pay in full you will receive a 2% full payment discount. You must stay for the full academic year to qualify for this.

Cancellations

Can I cancel my contract after I have moved in to the room?

If you book your room, and advise us after the 20th August 2016 that you want to cancel the room, you are liable for the rent until a replacement student is found to take over the room. If you find a replacement student, you are able to transfer the contract and will not be liable for the accommodation fees. Liberty Court does however have the right to keep £100 as a cancellation charge. Please note any replacement student found for your room has be a full-time City 1st year Undergraduate student.

How long before I receive a refund of rent if another student takes over my contract?

Refunds are processed within 28 days of the termination of your contract.

Housing Related

Is there any additional items I need to bring to the hall?

You will need to bring sheets, pillows and bedding, also all kitchen equipment and utensils. If you do not intend to bring this with you, you can also purchase packs from Liberty via a 3rd party company.

Can I have guests stay over?

Yes you can, one guest can stay two nights per week. You will need to liaise with management beforehand, and sign them in and out every time the leave.

Can I bring a TV with me?

You can bring a television with you, however it is your responsibility to make sure you have paid for a TV license.

Can I arrive before my contract start date?

Depending on the availability of rooms before your arrival date, you may be able to arrive early.

What if I am unhappy with my room, can I change?

Unfortunately it is not possible to swap rooms in hall, if you have issues with the room you have been allocated please contact the hall management.

What if I want to extend my stay?

It is possible to extend your stay, but you will have to pay the applicable summer rate for 2017 this £209. If you would like to extend your stay please contact the hall management.

Is there a cleaning service available?  

Under special circumstances it can be arranged, it costs £30 per bathroom, £100 per kitchen including oven.

What are the laundry charges?  

The laundry costs £2.30 per wash and £1.20 per dry.
