Prepare for launch
Want to run your own business? David Curchin will show you how to turn a good idea into a profitable plan.
"I have 30 years' experience in the business sector including ten years with Forte group and blue chip companies up to senior management level. I have also owned my own businesses from a trader in consumables to recruitment agencies, hospitality and entertainment venues.
"I currently head up the Organisation for Tourism and Hospitality Management and provide independent consultancy for areas of Higher Education, small business development and business start-ups.
"Teachers need relevant experience in their field. I did my MBA later in life and felt that most of my lecturers were lacking in practical experience of the subject.
"In the lessons I was often asked to share the knowledge I had gained with my fellow students. These same students suggested I take up lecturing as a profession. Soon after I was given the opportunity to teach students to relieve absent lecturers.
"Teaching is a rewarding profession. I like working with people from different social and cultural backgrounds. I also get a lot from helping students gain confidence so they can succeed in their ambitions. I think everybody should be encouraged to reach their full potential.
"Over the years I have been fortunate to teach and mentor students from all over the world and am still in contact with many of them to this day. Many students have taken over from their parents to successfully run their family businesses. I have also taught students who have opened new start-up businesses worldwide.
"My advice for anyone thinking about taking a course at City? It's the right time, the right place and the right opportunity to meet like-minded people for networking and sharing ideas in the same field. It is also a great way for students to gain practical knowledge and support from a lecturer with relevant experience and a real understanding of their subject matter."
