Tuition fees

How tuition fees work for UK/EU and International Students.

UK/EU Students

All UK and other EU students can apply to take out a government-subsidised loan to cover the full cost of tuition fees.

The loan is repayable after graduation, so you will not have to pay your tuition fees before you start your course or while studying and the payment for your fees will be made directly to us on your behalf.

You will need to apply to your Local Authority for the loan.

Repayment of tuition fee loans

Interest is only charged at the rate of inflation so the amount that you borrow is effectively the amount you pay. Once you have graduated and are earning over £15,000 a year, you will start to repay your tuition fee loan at affordable rates based on the level of your salary. Currently, the repayment rate is 5 per cent of any amount over £15,000 that you are earning, so if your salary is £20,000, you will only make repayments of 5 per cent of £5,000. These repayments will be deducted by your employer from your monthly earnings.

For students from other EU countries, repayments work in the same way as the UK tuition fee loans, but the income threshold for when you have to start repaying will differ depending on the country you are living in.

Instalment scheme

Students who don't take out a loan will need to pay their fees directly to the University. We have an instalment scheme for UK and EU undergraduate students whereby 50 per cent of the course fee is paid at registration and the remaining 50 per cent is paid at the end of January.

NHS funded courses

Home students on the following health professional courses at City University London will normally have their tuition fees paid by the NHS

  • BSc Nursing and/or Midwifery
  • Diploma in Nursing
  • BSc Radiography
  • BSc Speech and Language Therapy

International Students

The University must classify all students as either 'home' or 'overseas' for fees purposes. If you are unsure about your status, please contact the Admissions office; email ugadmissions@city.ac.uk, telephone +44 (0)207 040 8716.

If you or your parents are nationals of a member state of the European Union (EU) and have been resident in the EU throughout the three-year period immediately before the start of the course, your may qualify to pay fees at the lower home rate. Otherwise you will be considered an overseas student and pay full-cost fees.

If you are coming to study at City from outside the EU, you will probably be classified as an overseas student. If you ahve been living in the UK/EU for less than three years you are also likely to be classified as an overseas student.

If you are an overseas student your tuition fees must be paid either by yourself or by a sponsor. You are advised to make arrangements for payment well before you arrive at the University.

Sponsorship

If your fees are to be paid in full or in part on your behalf by your employer or by another organisation, your will be sent a sponsorship form (SP1) to complete before you register. This form must be signed by your sponsoring organisation, agreeing to full payment of the fees within 30 days of an invoice being presented. Companies run by relatives or friends will not be accepted as sponsors, and the University will only continue to recognise an organistion as your sponsor if payments are made promptly. If the fee is not paid you will become liable for the debt.

You will be required to pay the balance of the tuition fee, after any contribution by your sponsor, in full at or before registering.

Instalment scheme

We have an instalment scheme for the payment of tuition fees which is open to all self-financing overseas undergraduate students. This allows you to pay the annual fee in two equal instalments.
