Why Music at City?

Exceptional employment prospects
The Times Good University Guide 2008 lists City University London as second in the UK for music graduate employment prospects. The degree structure enables students to explore a range of music-related careers, through optional modules in sound recording, multimedia authoring and music therapy, and you can also develop the skills needed for specific careers such as arts administration or teaching.

Top-class performance tuition
If you are at Grade 8 or equivalent standard, our unique relationship with the Guildhall School of Music & Drama means that we can offer students private performance lessons from professors in a wide range of classical and world music ensembles, at no extra cost to you. The University’s Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir regularly perform at large central London concert venues, and all music students participate in at least one of the department’s ensembles.

Diversity of modules
The Department of Music offers modules in an unparalleled range of subject areas including performance, western music, non-western music, popular music, film music, music technology, music business and music therapy. We also offer both instrumental and vocal composition, and electroacoustic composition.

First-rate facilities
A multi-million pound refurbishment project officially opened in 2009, creating state-of-the-art facilities and accommodation including dedicated performance areas, 12 sound-proofed rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, two surround-sound and five stereo composition studios, and PC and Mac laboratories with a total of 24 workstations. Students also have access to our new facility for video editing, and portable video and recording equipment is available for location recording and fieldwork projects.

Committed, top-quality staff
In the last ‘Research Assessment Exercise’, City’s Department of Music was judged to be of the highest international quality, obtaining the top rating of 5* (one of only 9 music departments in the UK to do so).  All staff are active in their primary area of research, meaning that students will be taught by acknowledged experts who contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their field.

Central London location
City University London’s central location puts us in easy reach of major arts institutions such as the Barbican, the British Library, Sadlers Wells, the Royal Opera House and the London Coliseum, providing not only a fantastic range of musical events, but also a host of employment, volunteering and networking opportunities to enable students to enhance their employment prospects.
