Bursaries & scholarships

There is a range of undergraduate bursaries and scholarships on offer, available for UK and EU students, based on academic achievement and/or financial need, to help fund your studies at City University London. Some of these bursaries and scholarships are offered by the University, including The Lord Mayor of London Scholarships for Academic Excellence; others are offered by external organisations. The Lord Mayor of London Scholarships for Academic Excellence

These awards are open to exceptional UK and EU students. They are worth up to £3,000 a year for at least three years. Find out if you're eligible and how much you could receive.

National Scholarship Programme

Jointly funded by City University London and the UK Government, a total of £918,000 will be awarded through this scholarship programme in 2013/14. Find out if you're eligible and how much you could receive.

The City Undergraduate Student Choice Bursary

The City Undergraduate Student Choice Bursary is aimed at Home/UK undergraduates ordinarily resident in England, from household incomes of between £16,001 and £42,611 starting an undergraduate degree in 2013/14. The bursary aims to supplement Student Finance and provide additional financial support to assist with a combination of expenses including childcare, course materials and travel costs.

Eligibility criteria:

  • New Home/UK undergraduates starting in 2013/14;
  • Ordinarily resident in England;
  • In receipt of a full or partial maintenance grant from Student Finance England.

Value:

£1,000 per year for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic progress. (Please see the terms and conditions for full details).

How to apply:

There is no application form to complete. When applying for student finance through Student Finance England (SFE) please give your consent to share your financial information with your University. You will then automatically be considered for a bursary (provided you meet the eligibility criteria listed above).

Notification and payment:

Successful undergraduates will be contacted during January 2014, payments will be made in two equal instalments in February and May each year.

The City Undergraduate Care Leavers Bursary

The City Undergraduate Care Leavers Bursary is a new bursary for Home/UK undergraduates ordinarily resident in England who live or lived in care.

Eligibility criteria:

  • New Home/UK undergraduates starting in 2013/14 who can demonstrate that they live or have lived in care;
  • Ordinarily resident in England
  • In receipt of a full or partial maintenance grant from Student Finance England;
  • Aged 25 years old or younger on the 1 September 2013.

Value:

£1,000 per year for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic progress. This bursary will be paid in addition to any funding received through National Scholarship Programme or Lord Mayor of London Scholarship for Academic Excellence. How to apply:

There is no application form for this bursary. Eligible candidates will be awarded from the data received from UCAS and on recommendation from the City Outreach Office. When applying for student finance through Student Finance England (SFE) please give your consent to share your financial information with your University. You will then automatically be considered for a bursary (provided you meet the eligibility criteria listed above).

Notification and payment:

Undergraduates will be contacted during January 2014, payments will be made in two equal instalments in February and May each year.

The City Undergraduate Accommodation Bursary

The City Undergraduate Accommodation Bursary is aimed at Home/UK undergraduates ordinarily resident in England, from household incomes of up to £42,611. The bursary will provide financial support towards accommodation costs in City's nominated halls of residence only.

Eligibility criteria:

  • New Home/UK undergraduates starting in 2013/14;
  • Ordinarily resident in England;
  • In receipt of a full or partial maintenance grant from Student Finance England;
  • Living in a City nominated Halls of Residence from the start of the 2013/14 academic year.

Value:

£2,000 per year for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic progress. (Please see the terms and conditions for full details).

How to apply:

You do not need to complete an application form. When applying for student finance through Student Finance England (SFE) please give your consent to share your financial information with your University. You will then automatically be considered for a bursary (provided you meet the eligibility criteria listed above).

Notification and payment:

Successful undergraduates will be contacted during January 2014, payments will be made directly to City's nominated Halls of Residences towards the third terms accommodation fees (around April each year).

The City Undergraduate Mature Student Bursary

The City Undergraduate Mature Student Bursary is intended to provide additional financial support for mature Home/UK undergraduates ordinarily resident in England, from household incomes of up to £42,611.

Eligibility criteria:

  • New Home/UK undergraduates starting in 2013/14;
  • Ordinarily resident in England;
  • In receipt of a full or partial maintenance grant from Student Finance England;
  • Aged 21 years of age or older on 1 September 2013.

Value:

£1,000 per year for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic progress. (Please see the terms and conditions for full details).

How to apply:

You do not need to complete a separate application form. When applying for student finance through Student Finance England (SFE) please give your consent to share your financial information with your university. You will then automatically be considered for a bursary (provided you meet the eligibility criteria listed above).

Notification and payment:

Successful undergraduates will be contacted during January 2014, cash payments will be made in two equal instalments in February and May each year.

The Cunningham Undergraduate Scholarship 2013/14

The Cunningham Undergraduate Scholarship is a generous scholarship providing £3,000 per academic year towards maintenance. The scholarship is aimed at undergraduates from low household incomes in financial hardship who have achieved outstanding results in their 'A' levels.

Eligibility criteria:

  • New full-time UK/Home undergraduates starting in 2013/14;
  • In receipt of student finance, with a residual household income of £10,000 per year or less (as assessed by Student Finance England);
  • Holding an offer of admission from one of the following City Schools: School of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Health Sciences, School of Informatics, School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences or the City Law School;
  • Achieved grades AAA or above in 'A' levels (or UK equivalent qualifications).

Value:

  • £3,000 per academic year, for a maximum of three years.
  • The award will be paid in two equal instalments in January and April each year.

Application and Deadline:

  • You are required to submit two supporting documents:
    1) a photocopy of your student finance breakdown letter and
    2) a photocopy of your current passport or a photocopy of your birth certificate.
  • Applications must be submitted by Friday 1st November 2013 5pm.

Notification:

Applications will be assessed on the basis of financial hardship and academic merit. Shortlisting will be conducted by the City Financial Support Team and the sponsor.  Short-listed applicants may be required to provide further information and/or attend an interview. All applicants will be advised of the results in January 2014.

The Worshipful Company Awards

1. The Worshipful Company of Dyers' Bursary:

The Worshipful Company of Dyers is one of the Livery Companies of the City of London. It originated as a trade association for members of the dyeing industry but is now mainly a charitable institution. The bursary is worth £1,000 per academic year, for a maximum of three years. Priority will be given to applicants from the Dyers sponsored schools: Archbishop Tenison's School in Lambeth, London and St Saviour's and St Olave's School in Southwark, London.

2. The Worshipful Company of Needlemakers' Award:

The Needlemakers is one of the London livery companies which sprang from ancient craft guilds. The Worshipful Company of Needlemakers is Number 65 in the order of precedence of the Livery Companies of the City. This award is worth £1,000 for one year only.

3. The Worshipful Company of Saddlers' Undergraduate Scholarships:

The Worshipful Company of Saddlers is one of the very oldest of the City of London Livery companies and is proud of its heritage and to this day remains a 'working' company. It retains a close involvement with the British saddler trade and equestrianism, alongside its broad education and charitable activities. There are four scholarships available worth £1,000 each for one year only

Value:

£1,000 for one year only, except of The Worshipful Company of Dyers' Bursary which is £1,000 per year for a maximum of three years.

Eligibility criteria:

  • New full-time UK/Home undergraduates starting in 2013/14;
  • In receipt of student finance, with a residual household income of £10,000 per year or less (as assessed by Student Finance England);
  • Achieved grades ABB or above in 'A' level (or UK equivalent qualifications).

Application and deadline:

Short-listed applicants may be required to provide further information and/or attend an interview. All applicants will be advised of the results in January 2014. The recipients are expected to attend the University Scholarship Evening in February/March 2014 and the Worshipful Company Dinners.

The William Temple Accommodation Scholarship 2013/14

City University London is delighted to announce the William Temple House Accommodation Scholarship worth £2,725 for one year. This is a generous scholarship providing accommodation for five months in Earls Court, Central London. This is a popular international student accommodation facility with an enclosed private garden and excellent transport links across London.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Full-time international undergraduates;
  • Due to start Year 2 in 2013/14;
  • Experiencing financial hardship.

Value and Location:

  • £2,725 towards a single room at William Temple House for one year.
  • The accommodation is located at William Temple House, 29 Trebovir Road, London Earls Court, SW5 9NQ. Earls Court is a busy and vibrant area of Central London, with excellent transport links: Earls Court Tube Station is a two minutes walk away from the accommodation and there are a number of day and night bus services in and around the Earls Court area.
  • On-site facilities include a private garden, PC room, lounge, laundry room and spacious kitchens.

  • You are also required to submit appropriate evidence to support your application demonstrating your financial hardship e.g. bank statements, wage slips, sponsorship letters. Any documents not submitted in English must be accompanied by an official translation.
  • Please ensure you submit your application by the deadline Monday 3 June 2013 5pm.
  • Applications will be assessed on the basis of financial need only. Short-listed applicants may be required to provide further information and/or attend an interview. Shortlisting will be conducted by the City Financial Support Team and a William Temple House representative(s). The recipient will be notified around the end of June 2013.

Terms and Conditions

The scholarship will be applied from January 2014 to May 2014. The recipient will be expected to stay in the accommodation for at least one full academic year (e.g. September to May/June). Fees are due on arrival for the first four weeks and thereafter every four weeks in advance. The recipient is required to give four weeks notice and be a resident for at least sixteen weeks. The recipient will need to pay the reminder of the accommodation fees of £136.25 per week (£545 every four weeks). Fees include electricity, heating, water and unlimited Wi-Fi. A refundable deposit of £400 is required and non-refundable administration fee of £70. Accommodation is self-catering and non-smoking. The facility remains open throughout the Christmas and Easter holidays and normal fees are charged for any unoccupied rooms. For further information on William Temple House please see their website.

Sir John Cass's Foundation Lord Mayor's Scholarship Programme

City University London is excited to announce that we are a selected participating institution in the Sir John Cass's Foundation Lord Mayor's Scholarship Programme. Each scholarship is worth £7,000 per year, for a maximum of three years subject to successful academic progression each year.

Eligibility criteria:

  • be a first year UK Home student;
  • be aged under 25 years on 1 September 2012;
  • be a permanent resident of one of the following Inner London Boroughs (Camden, City of London, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth or Westminster) and have lived there for at least one year;
  • be eligible for student finance and has been assessed by Student Finance England (SFE) as having a residual household income of £50,000 a year or less; AND
  • be starting an undergraduate degree in science.

This scholarship scheme is now closed for 2012/13 and will re-open July 2013.

International Exchange Scholarships

City is providing Exchange Scholarships of up to £1,000 to assist students to study abroad for up to one year, as part of their degree, at one of our partner institutions. Please see the International Office's pages for further information.

Other City Undergraduate Scholarships

The Worshipful Company of Dyers Bursary

New UK Home full-time undergraduates in financial need are able to apply for this award, priority will be given to undergraduates from Dyers sponsored schools which are Archbishop Tenison's School in the London Borough of Lambeth and St Saviour's and St Olave's School in the London Borough of Southwark. The award is worth £1,000 per academic year subject to successful academic progress each year.

The Worshipful Company of Needlemakers Award

New UK Home full-time undergraduates are able to apply for this award. The award is worth £1,000 and is paid in the first year only.

City Future Fund Scholarships

New UK Home full-time undergraduates are able to apply for this award. The award is worth £1,000 and is paid in the first year only. The City Future Fund Scholarships are supported by generous donations from alumni and friends through the City Future Fund. It is only with these donations that we are able to offer the essential financial assistance/scholarships/money management course to current students. This scholarship scheme is now closed for 2012/13 and will re-open in July 2013.

The Helena Kennedy Foundation Bursaries

The Helena Kennedy Foundation provides bursaries for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are facing severe financial hardship. Find out more about these bursaries.

The Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust Bursaries

These bursaries are open to students on first degree courses who are resident in the UK and who are the son, daughter, spouse, widow, or widower of a commercial traveller, chemist or grocer. The bursaries are intended to assist students in financial need. Find out more and download an application form.

Academic Prizes

Prizes are available to undergraduate second and third year students, including EU and international students. Students will be nominated by their School.

City University Bursary

The City University Bursary is available to students who commenced their study prior to September 2012. Find out more about the City University Bursary.
