Sources of Funding

There may be other sources of funding for your postgraduate study available. If you are applying for funding, it is a good idea to do this as early as possible once you have decided on the course you wish to study.

Research Councils

There are eight Research Councils that may provide assistance funding individual postgraduate students.  You will need to contact the relevant Council directly for more information about eligibility criteria and application forms.  You should do this early on as many Councils have closing dates within the first half of the calendar year.  The eight councils are as follows:

Research Studentships

City University offers a range of Research Studentships for students on full time doctorate courses.  The awards in 2006/7 were valued at £12,500 per annum for three years plus a full tuition fee waiver.  To check whether you are eligible to apply and application deadlines, go to the Research Funding website.

Trusts and Charities

If you are unable to source any funding for your postgraduate study, you can apply to various charities, foundations and trusts for partial funding opportunities.  Funding is often dependent on what you will be studying or researching and can range from a small award to cover the cost of travel expenses to partial help with tuition fees.  Further information can be found from various publications available in your local library.  These include:

  • The Grants Register
  • The Charities Digest
  • The Educational Grants Directory
  • The Directory of Grant Making Trusts

Educational Grants Advisory Service (EGAS)

EGAS is an organisation which provides information and advice for students looking to fund their studies in post-16 education in the UK.  The organisation publishes a guide to student funding online, which provides useful information about funding opportunities and how to make applications.

Funderfinder

The Centre for Career Skills and Development and the Student 's Union Information & Representation Centre has Funderfinder software available for use by City University students.  The software is designed to assist students and other individuals to identify charitable trusts that may give them money.  Drop in at either centre to find out how to access the software or visit www.funderfinder.org

The Nuffield Foundation

Offers small grants for social science research expenses.  Contact The Nuffield Foundation for more information.

Tuition Fee Reductions

Some Schools within the University, such as the School of Informatics, may offer tuition fee reductions for students who have previously studied at City.  Contact your School for more information.
