Students' Union Societies are set up to help students come together for a wide range of non-competitive activities.

 

We currently have over 40 societies here at City covering a wide range of interests. These include those listed below - just click the active links to find out more.

 

Students who wish to set up new societies to cover interests not already represented are given help and assistance from the Student Activities team.

Societies are run by their own elected committee of officers with the support of the Students’ Union.  They decide on and organise their own activities and these may include outings, visiting speakers, social events and parties.

   Actuarial Science Society

The actuarial society is to aid the students to find out more about the actuarial profession. We aim to help our members to be in the best position possible for them to succeed in obtaining their dream job.

 

Secondly the actuarial society is a source for social activities that will give the students the opportunity to network with each other, and also be a forum for discussion for any topic that any member wishes to raise.

   AIESEC Society

AIESEC City is part of the world’s largest student organization.

   Bangladesh Society

The Bangladesh Society is a close-knit community of students at City University who are enthusiastic about promoting and nurturing Bangladeshi culture on campus. Our aim is to unite all Bangladeshis on campus under one umbrella.

 

Bangladesh Society organises several events which cater to the social, intellectual and cultural aspects of our campus community.  We have Eid and End of the Term celebrations, host notable intellectuals for talks and discussions, and put on performance shows.

 

We are also committed to the service of the community and build a bridge between the Bangladeshi Community and the students, which serves as a platform to unite the wider Bangladeshi population in City University.

   Canadian and American Law Society

Our society is tailored towards incoming law students who are in search of opportunities which will enable them to add various legal activities to their C.V.

We are providing a mentoring service as a way of providing help and information  to our members.  Currently, we have arranged weekly mentoring projects with upper year law students mentoring incomers.

 

We also have a talk in mid mid-November on qualifying as a lawyer in various jurisdictions.

 

Furthermore we have two dates scheduled for volunteer service with Habitat for Humanity, which will be building houses for the unprivileged.

   Christian Union

As the Christian Union we meet together weekly to learn, often from a speaker, about something from the Bible.

 

For the autumn term 2008 we will be studying the book of Mark.

 

We are also hoping to spend a week reaching out to the campus at the beginning of 2009, but with different events and opportunities to share our faith with our fellow students and lecturers at City University

   City Investment Society

Our society is about learning about the financial world.  We will use a variety of methods and activities to achieve this. 

 

We have been able to get hold of professionals working in the City from top financial institutions to come in and talk to members. 


We are contacting training firms to come and talk about the whole concept of The City. 


We have been able to get a sponsorship of over £1300 from Stock Market professionals who are willing to come to our club and share their knowledge with us. 
We will also provide as many resources as we can to aid our members’ learning.

   City - SIFE

City-SIFE is the City University Students in Free Enterprise team.

 

SIFE is dedicated to nurturing the entrepreneurial skills of university students. We run projects over the year to enhance these skills along with creating economic opportunity and raising business awareness. The teams present the results of their projects at an annual National Competition and the winners go forward to represent their country in a Global competition.

 

Our Events/Projects include:

- Attending the SIFE Leadership Training Camp

- Entrepreneurship Program: we teach young people the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.

- International Projects: Kenya Entrepreneurship fair, NUTTS working with small business enterprises to improve revenue.

-  Regional and National competitions against other University SIFE teams

   Creative Industries Society

The Creative Industries Society is a body for those wishing to have more involvement in the Creative Industries.

 

A main feature of the Creative Industries is that it is not always what you know but who you know. This society will allow people to come together, collaborate on ideas and network with others who either have the same drive and passion or could potentially help you progress further in your chosen career.

 

With each person being interested and having different extensive knowledge in different areas of the Creative Industries, from film to music, events to radio, this society will help people to use the best resource we have, that being each other!

   Economics Society

The Economics Society is a long running University Society dedicated to widening the economic knowledge of members.

 

This has been done in the past through debates, speakers (including Tim Harford and John Sloman), careers events (including a talk by members of the GES and Andy Ross), publications (including the Economics Society Magazine and Website), networking events and numerous visits to multiple varied organizations (including the BoE and the Bentham Project).

 

More events along the theme of these are planned for the next year.

We are a society for any students interested in economics, not just those studying Economics.

   EWB-UK Society

The EWB-UK Society (Engineering Without Borders) is a worldwide student-led charity committed to relieving poverty and facilitating human development through engineering.

 

EWB-UK is involved with over 2000 students from more than 16 university based societies and is also supported by a nationwide network of professionals. 

 

The City branch will give City students the chance to benefit from the six main programmes run by EWB-UK - placements, bursaries, research, training, outreach and education.

   Film Making Society

We proudly introduce the City University Film Making Society.

At the present we are a group of likeminded students with a passion for film, television, art and drama.

 

Our goal is to produce a short film using the City area to hopefully enter into a London Film Festival.

 

If you choose to join, you will take an active role in the creative side of all projects undertaken and be part of weekly/monthly meetings and planned events. SO if you are passionate about film making this is the society for you!

The Indian Society organises the following activities:

 

  • Weekly football and cricket matches
  • Celebrations for significant dates in the Indian calendar eg Independence Day, Holi, Diwali, GARBA

   Islamic Society

The Islamic Society (ISoc) of City University is dedicated to catering for the needs of all Muslim staff and students on campus, regardless of different abilities and sexes.

 

The Islamic service we provide is upon the methodology and guidance of the Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah as it was understood by the blessed three generations that were closest to it.

 

The ISoc also runs numerous activities including ‘Eid and Ramadan gatherings, annual dinners, trip and outings, Islamic courses, student discount cards and much more.

 

Our aim is to strive to work to maintain a harmonious relation with all other faith societies and clubs.

   Jewish Society

The Jewish Society is the main representative body for Jewish students on campus.

 

Our activities are focused on education, providing weekly kosher lunches on campus for our traditional “Lunch and Learn” sessions as well as inviting key members of the community to speak at our sessions.

 

We plan to have events centred on the Jewish festivals and anticipate certain educational events for Holocaust Memorial Day.

 

Essentially we provide a foundation for Jews on campus to meet and discuss certain ideas and issues.

   Krishna Conciousness Society

Have you ever tried Yoga or meditation?

Are you interested in philosophy or spirituality?

Do you want to look at the world a little more closely?

 

The Krishna Consciousness Society aims to put students in touch with Eastern spiritual techniques, so that they can apply ancient wisdom to modern life.

 

We will be having at least one event a week held on Thursdays after 6pm.

   Malaysian Society

The Malaysian Society aims to promote the Malaysian Culture as well as to provide opportunities for students to broaden their international circle of friends.

 

As a student-centred organization, the society also provides some form of support to new students whom may need assistance in coping with a different lifestyle, interacting with peers or even study tips – all from students who would understand the worries and difficulties that new students may encounter.

 

In order to fulfil these aims, the society organises social events to bring students together and foster interpersonal relationships with fellow members that will make their experience on campus a more enjoyable one.

   Mauritian Society

The society is an international one consisting mostly of Mauritians at City University.

 

We organise entertaining events in the likes of Fresher’s Welcome Party, Bollywood, Christmas Party, Sega Night and the famous “City Faya”, launched two years ago and has since been a major and successful event.

We also organise trips to other universities like Warwick and Manchester where established Mauritian Societies are present.

 

So, we welcome you guys to join our society and be part of a dynamic group.

The City University Politics Society is open to anyone who is interested in Politics and all its sub-topics.

 

The society organizes events where we will discuss and debate current affairs along with international and foreign affairs, such as armed conflicts, human rights, terrorism, the environment, education, law etc.

   Sikh Society

The Sikh society aims to unite students at the University with a keen interest in the Sikh religion.

 

During the upcoming year we will be organising many different events and activities for all members.

 

These include the Annual Cha and Samosa Party to welcome new members, followed by various other activities and events such as 5-aside football for girls and boys, paintballing and talks by guest speakers during London Sikhi Month.

   Tamil Society

City University Tamil society brings Tamil university students together.

We interact with each other by taking part in sports activities such as football, netball and rounders. Club nights take place all year round with all the London universities for this society.

 

Society members can also take part in the other universities’ Tamil society shows.

 

City will have its own Tamil society show this year with a Tamil celebrity as the chief guest and at the end of the year we will have a summer ball.

   Trading and Hedging Society for Cass and City

Aims and objectives:


-  Working with international databases such as Bloomberg and Reuters and establish an experience significant for students interested in future career in Finance.
-  Workshops shall provide an insight into Hedge Funds/ Private Equity markets, the different jobs available in the financial industry and focus on hedging and trading strategies.
-  Invite bankers and workers from the City such as from WestLB Fixed income division, BNP Paribas, Nomura and lecturers from Cass.
-  To have a practical experience and implement/test our theories we will be competing on virtual trading platforms (i.e. with virtual money).
