NUS Membership

The National Union of Students (NUS) is a voluntary membership organisation consisting of a confederation of local student representative organisations in universities and colleges throughout the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.

The vision is of NUS as a pioneering, innovative and powerful campaigning organisation: the definitive national voice of students, shaped by the core values of equality, democracy and collectivism.

Students need a national voice to ensure they’re fully represented. The NUS exists to promote, defend and extend the rights of students. Individual universities and colleges elect officers who not only represent the students within their own institutions, but they also take their views to the national level via the NUS.

NUS also provides services directly to individual students via their website, nus.org.uk, in the form of information and resources relevant to every student. This includes advice on housing, student finance, settling in and Freshers’ week, diversity, and many other topics.

Every student registered at the University is automatically a member of the Students' Union though students do have the right to opt out of membership if they so choose.

NUS Extra Cards

An NUS Extra card brings a range of benefits for students and, at only £10 per year, it is well worth applying for.  For example, cardholders get access to a range of over 80 specially negotiated discounts, offers and competitions available online or on the high street.

You can buy your NUS Extra card from the Students' Union once you join the University or purchase it online on the NUS website where you will also find more information about the benefits and discounts of the NUS Extra card.
