The benefits of living in Halls of Residence
We realise that your requirements for the accommodation in which you live and work are much more than the essential provision of secure and comfortable lodgings. So, what can we offer that the ‘private sector’ cannot?
City University is in the vibrant heart of cosmopolitan Islington. Islington’s main high street is one of the evening destinations in London throughout the week, being almost entirely dedicated to restaurants and bars. In addition, Covent Garden and the West End are only 15 minutes away on the underground. If it is life and excitement you are looking for then Islington has it! In contrast the Barbican Centre is one of the premier venues for art and culture in the UK. It’s facilities boast 3 cinema screens, a concert hall and various galleries and gardens. As a resident in University Halls you will find a profusion of arts, culture and vibrant nightlife all within walking distance.
Every Room in University residential accommodation has access to the Internet and World Wide Web through 'ResNet', the City University Residential Network. If you have a desktop or portable (“laptop”/”notebook”) PC which meets a minimum standard (Intel Celeron processor or equivalent, 128Mb RAM, integrated Network card or spare PCI/ PCMCIA slot, Windows XP or 2000), you can connect to the service via the data point in your room. Macintosh, UNIX and Linux workstations can also be connected although these are not supported under the ResNet service and will not, under any circumstances, be set up by the Computer Shop.
This service is similar to the broadband services provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs). For a subscription fee your PC can be on-line 24 hours per day, 7 days per week (excluding the “at risk” session on Tuesday morning and other advertised down-time), at data rates of up to 10Mb/s. Please note users may experience reduced throughput at times of peak usage. Further information is available from the Computing Services Department .
There are residential staff and security officers at each of the sites, and an on-call system operates outside of office hours to support students and deal with any emergencies.
Each room has its own telephone extension, and telephone cards are available from the reception desks in each Hall.
A year spent in Halls of Residence is a year filled with opportunity. All rooms are well-equipped single study bedrooms, and areas specifically designated for group work are also provided in some residences. Halls also give you the opportunity to immerse yourself in student activities. The proximity of so many other students makes Halls of Residence the hub of University social life.
