Academic Appeals

On this page, you will find links to appeal procedures, forms, and further guidance.

   Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught courses

The University's procedures allow for a review of an Assessment Board decision under certain circumstances. This is known as an appeal.

The appeal process is not designed to alter individual marks. If your appeal is granted, the most likely outcome is that you will be offered the chance of a further attempt to satisfy the requirements of the programme.

The procedures to follow are in the University's Senate Regulations. If you are studying at City University, refer to Senate Regulation 20. If you are following a programme which is Validated by City, but is run by another institution, refer to Senate Regulation 20b.

   Appeal forms

  • SAF1   School-level appeal (for students based at City University London)
  • SAF1V  Stage 1 appeal (for students on courses Validated by City)
  • SAF2  University-level appeal

   Accuracy of marks

Your work is marked according to formal assessment criteria, and the process incorporates a range of checks and balances designed to ensure accuracy and consistency. These include anonymous marking, moderation and/or second-marking. The marking process is also overseen by External Examiners.

If you are concerned about the accuracy of your marks, or you do not understand how they have been calculated, please speak to your course office in the first instance. Your personal tutor is also a good source of advice.

   Research degrees

As a research student, you have the option to appeal against the outcome of an examination. You may also appeal against a decision taken by the Board of Studies regarding suspension or withdrawal, or other change of registration status. Please refer to your Research Studies Handbook for guidance and/or to Senate Regulation 21 (see link above).

   Further advice and guidance
