Nursing Research

Nursing research in the School focuses on the support of people with acute and chronic conditions throughout the human life-cycle. The range of and scope of projects is enormous. The focus of the work in progress is to undertake research which will enhance the care of acutely and chronically sick people, reduce unplanned hospital admission and the development of iatrogenic conditions, promoting recovery, and enabling people to live as full a life as possible. The specific needs of vulnerable groups such as the homeless and those with stigmatising conditions also form an important part of the programme’s profile.

A substantial number of our PhD students are engaged in projects of this type. Work in progress includes the care of people with end-stage renal disease, care of the elderly and those with cancer and cardiovascular disease and the management of people with long term disabilities.

Midwifery Reseach

The School supports a programme of midwifery research which focuses on evidence-based midwifery, the use of routine datasets to support the care of mothers and babies and the evaluation of midwifery services.
