Midwifery and Child Health

Qualify as a Midwife

Midwifery has to be one of the most exciting aspects of healthcare. It is an area which attracts and develops confident and supportive practitioners.

There is a lot more to midwifery than just delivering babies. Midwifery is about being with, caring for and supporting women throughout their childbearing years. Ante natal and post natal care and support are just as important as is the underlying theory and experience which will allow you to approach every case with confidence and the right knowledge to ease the birthing process. There is more autonomy than in some other areas of healthcare with each midwife having his or her own caseload, for which they are responsible.

The BSc Midwifery course at City will prepare you for a rewarding career as a midwife. Upon successful completion of the course you will be registered by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and will have a professional qualification that is internationally recognised, offering diverse occupational opportunities.

Qualify as a Children's Nurse

Child nursing is a challenging yet highly fulfilling profession. Being able to support and care for a family when their child is ill, at the same time recognising each child as an individual, demands many nursing skills as well as the personal qualities of strength and versatility.

As a children’s nurse, you may care for children who are acutely ill, have long term health problems, have special needs, or may be dying. It is essential for a children’s nurse to be able to support families throughout times of great stress.

You will be taught the highest levels of technological competence and supported to develop excellent teaching and communication skills. In this way you will be able to empower children and their families with the knowledge they need in order to cope with the illness.

Children’s nurses work in accident and emergency departments, special care baby units and intensive care, as well as on children’s wards. There is also a need for children’s nurses in schools – both mainstream and special needs – and to visit sick children in their own homes. Children’s nurses also work in the community, advising on health promotion and accident prevention.

City's Child Nursing courses will prepare you for this challenging and rewarding profession. We offer Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate Diploma level courses, all of which lead to professional registration as a children's nurse.
