Teaching responsibilities:

Supervision of full time and part time MPhil/PhD students, regular lectures as part of post basic and post graduate education programmes. Contributes to curriculum development.


Research responsibilities:
Leads a programme of research into conflict and containment in psychiatry, using a variety of methodological approaches from interview based work through to controlled trials. Recent work has included the development and testing of an intervention to reduce absconding, investigations of ward safety and security policies, student nurses’ attitudes to containment measures, patterns of patient-staff conflict, among others.


Other:
Founder and co-owner of the psychiatric-nursing email list, founder and Director of the European Violence in Psychiatry Research Group. Reviewer for several peer reviewed journals, and referee to research grant awarding bodies Co-chair of the Education and Research subgroup of the Nursing Advisory Group to NIMH. Author of several books, more than 50 published papers, and has made over 50 conference presentations.
