In the last five years access to the Internet has increased dramatically. Among its many uses, the Internet has provided a new meeting ground for making contact with other people. And for seeking sex. According to recent research, gay men are more likely to use the Internet to seek sexual partners than heterosexual men and women.
Several studies in the USA and Europe have found increased levels of high risk sexual behaviour among gay men who seek sex on the Internet. In these studies, seeking sex on the Internet was also associated with having had a recent STD (sexually transmitted disease). However, research has yet to establish whether the excess risk actually occurred with sexual partners whom the men had met through the Internet. This information is important if we are to use the Internet effectively for sexual health promotion among gay men.
