I joined the Department of Sociology at City in 2001 as Professor of Sociology. I started my career as part of the ESRC Centre for Research on Ethnic Relations at the Universities of Aston and Warwick from 1980 to 1987. I then moved to my first lecturing position in the Department of Sociology at Birkbeck College, University of London, from 1987 to 1994. I then moved to the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Southampton to take up my first Chair in 1994. From there I moved to London South Bank University in 1998 as Professor of Sociology.

My teaching is focused on the sociology of race and racism, sociological theory, human rights and social theory, qualitative research methods and multiculturalism and citizenship. I enjoy teaching at all levels of the undergraduate programmes and on the masters programmes.

I have supervised a wide range of PhD students in both my own areas of research interest and in other fields of sociology. I welcome the opportunity to work with PhD students and I am interested to receive informal inquiries from prospective research students. I am currently supervising students working on a range of issues, including migration and refugees, minority families and social capital, Turkish speaking youth in London and Cuban music and popular culture.

I serve on the Strategic Research Board of the Economic and Social Research Council. I am also active in the administration of the Department of Sociology and the School of Social Sciences at City.

I am joint editor with Martin Bulmer of the international journal Ethnic and Racial Studies, published 10 times a year by Routledge

In my own time I enjoy living in London, being a loyal and enthusiastic supporter of West Bromwich Albion and travelling to new places.
