Communication and the City Group
Dr. Patria Román-Velázquez (Co-ordinator)
London is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, and it has gained a reputation for the quality and richness of its creative industries. These qualities have marked London as a world class city. However, it is also in the capital city where high poverty levels are recorded and where inequalities thrive. London offers plenty of experiences and opportunities for learning about communicative practices. This context together with the expertise of the members of the research group contributes to enhance our understanding of the city. Jointly the group covers research in European and Caribbean cities, and our aim is to expand our coverage to other regions.
The aim of the group is to understand how the city is produced, represented and consumed through policy initiatives, media outputs, commercial enterprise and cultural practices. This perspective highlights the interplay between media, government, commerce and people in the process of making, using and transforming distinct urban areas and the significance of these processes for communication practices.
