About Us

Welcome from the Head of Department

Frank Webster

I would like to welcome you to the web pages of the Department of Sociology at City University. The Department is well known for its teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and we have a strong commitment to teaching and learning. All staff in the Department are involved in the provision of both our core undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Our undergraduate programmes cover core areas of sociological theory, social research, and the sociological study of media, gender, race and crime. We have one of the largest Masters’ programmes in Sociology in the country, specialising in fields such as media and communications, human rights, social research methods, refugee studies, race and ethnicity, and gender, communities and development.

As well as our commitment to teaching and learning we have a strong research profile. The Department is at the forefront of many current scholarly and research led debates in contemporary sociology. Our core teaching staff teach at all levels and are able to bring insights from their scholarship and research into their courses.

Located in the heart of London, a city with a dynamic and vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere, the Department is an exciting and forward looking place in which to study Sociology. The University and our wonderful London environment offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

The Department is housed in the modern School of Social Sciences building and sees itself as a closely knit community of academic staff, students and administrative staff. We have a diverse student intake at all levels and take pride in the role we play in developing the careers of our students from all parts of the world.
