Representation & reception

This module will introduce you to the main approaches to understanding the relationships between audiences and media.

We will cover both historical and current thinking, and address both the academic and the industry perspectives.

We will emphasise the main measures used as research 'currencies': those which are used for the management, planning and assessment of media performance, and which underpin media ownership and finance.

Among other things you will examine the historical development of conceptualisations of the audience and analyse the role of audiences, and the methods used to assess them, in the operation and output of the broadcasting industry.
