Qualitative research methods
This module will familiarise you with a range of qualitative research methods relevant to sociological research - from semi-structured, in-depth and life history interviewing, ethnography and participant observation, to the use of documents and archival materials. Emphasis is given to the complementarity of qualitative and quantitative methods and you will learn to distinguish between theoretically informed empirical research and simple 'fact finding'.The module will equip you to critically evaluate qualitative research, as well as provide you with the practical means to devise and carry out an academically rigorous research project yourself.
You will look at various aspects of qualitative research design, data collection and data analysis and will become competent with a range of concepts and methods for observing, interviewing, recording and analysing field data.
Attention will be paid to issues of reflexivity and ethics in the research process, enabling you to engage with the practical, theoretical and ethical principles of qualitative research practice.
