Political Islam in global politics
In this module you will examine the evolution of political islam and its different articulations in muslim and western societies, focusing on its impact on contemporary global politics.
You will look at key ideas and events in the history of the religion of Islam and islamic political thought before concentrating on key figures and movements of the 20th and 21st centuries, examples of muslim states, and intra-muslim politics.
You will undertake historical and theoretical readings and analyse regional and country case studies (from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe and Asia).
Key themes will include: societal reform, religious authorities and political institutions in Islam, the relationship between Islam and democracy, liberation and nationalist movements in the post colonial experience, religious fundamentalism, terrorism, secular and Western responses to political Islam in the era of globalisation.
