Policymaking and diplomacy
The aim of the module is to introduce you to conceptual and empirical steps of policy analysis. The module builds upon your conceptual and historical background in the core areas of international relations, such as global governance, international politics, global political economy and international security, and leads you to apply your conceptual insights to more practical and contemporary issues pertaining to the institutions, mechanisms and processes of policy-making and diplomacy in contemporary international affairs.
This module is organized around a combination of lectures and a series of expert-led workshops. Practicing business consultants, diplomats, political campaigners and politicians will lead you through a series of case studies covering a range of key areas of policy formation and implementation.
Thematically, the workshops cover a range of areas of policy formation and implementation, including: economic, trade and foreign policy, diplomacy and negotiations, political risk and political campaigns.
Topics include: principles of policy analysis; challenges of diplomacy; economic policy in the globalised age; trade negotiations and currency wars; crisis management, conflict resolution, and political risk.
