Migration and social inclusion

Migration and social inclusion

(Not running in 2011/12)

In this module you will focus on refugees and asylum seekers in europe. The first session provides a context by focusing on migration and responses to migration in the post-colonial era.

You will then  examine citizenship both theoretically and in terms of the rights associated with it, more specifically the exclusion of asylum seekers.

Theories of migrant incorporation are then examined, beginning with the early american theorists through to more contemporary debates on integration, multi-culturalism and race relations.

Finally, you will explore the way in which refugee settlement works in practice by examining factors such as  social networks and economic participation.
